Operation Stand Down Rhode Island is seeking a Legal Assistance Attorney to join our team and advocate on behalf of veterans facing a variety of legal challenges. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing expert legal counsel, representation in court proceedings, and support services to empower veterans in need. Experience or a willingness to learn a must!

Responsibilities:

Legal Advocacy:

  • Advise and represent individuals in a variety of civil legal matters including landlord tenant law, representation before the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal, basic estate planning, and consumer law matters, including debt collection, garnishments, usury, fraud, and financial exploitation.
  • Educate veterans about their rights and options in legal matters.

Client Advocacy:

  • Conduct thorough legal assessments and consultations with veterans to understand their specific consumer law and foreclosure challenges.
  • Develop and implement effective legal strategies tailored to individual cases.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date case records.

Supportive Services Engagement:

  • Work collaboratively with OSDRI case managers, social workers, and other community organizations, including U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs resources, to create a network of support for veterans.
  • Conduct outreach programs to raise awareness about available legal services for veterans.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and a valid RI bar license.
  • Highly organized and comfortable handling multiple cases at once.
  • Compassion and sensitivity to the unique challenges faced by veterans.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and independently.
  • Veteran or Veteran Family Member preferred.
