This position involves advanced and varied administrative work requiring a high level of skill and increased decision-making responsibilities and knowledge of Student Financial Services. The Lead Financial Aid Specialist prepares a variety of typewritten documents; executes a variety of administrative procedures, files and manages records; receives callers and visitors, and performs related work as assigned. They frequently develop and refine work routines and are expected to carry out the assignments through to completion with a minimum of supervision. Work also includes devising and implementing new work methods, interpreting rules and procedures.

Salary: Appropriate placement on ACCS Salary Schedule E2, Grade 3: $45,220 - $62,710

(Salary placement within this range is determined by your documented years of full-time related work experience)


Work Hours: Monday through Thursday, 7:45 a.m. - 5:15 p.m.; Friday 7:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.

  1. Oversee the Alabama State Grant Scholarship Program, Pathways to Progress Initiative, and Re(Engage).
  2. Oversee the SEOG Program.
  3. Manage the Lifetime Eligibility for Pell.
  4. Oversee the Financial Aid Calendar.
  5. Organize the Director of Student Financial Services’ calendar.
  6. Manage ETV/Fostering Hope Scholarships.
  7. Assist with R2T4’s.
  8. Assist with Professional Judgements.
  9. Manage Consortium Agreements & Tuition Waivers
  10. Receive, input and process paperwork ensuring items are submitted in a timely manner.
  11. Discern when confidentiality in work needs to be maintained and maintain that confidentiality.
  12. Alert supervisor of any issues that are in need of upper management attention.
  13. Communicate with customers (students, faculty and staff, the public) in person, via email and/or phone to disseminate and explain information and resolve issues.
  14. Perform all duties with professionalism.
  15. Assist with the Director with special projects.
  16. Assist with athletic scholarships.
  17. Assists in the preparation and managing of departmental budgets.
  18. Proof and edit correspondence and documents.
  19. Input and process purchase orders as well as other information into Banner.
  20. Create and maintain filing systems.
  21. Order supplies.
  22. Answer a multi-line phone system and direct calls appropriately.
  23. Greet in-person visitors and respond to their needs appropriately.
  24. Type and transcribe letters, memos and other correspondence or written documentation.
  25. Prepare meeting agendas and take meeting minutes when needed.
  26. Operate a computer and other standard office equipment in the performance of duties.
  27. Print missing information letters for students.
  28. Assist Director and Assistant Director with Pell Grant and Student Loan files.
  29. Screen and route incoming mail including email.
  30. Submit maintenance work orders.
  31. Performs related work as assigned.
  1. A minimum of two (2) years (64 semester hours) of postsecondary education from an accredited institution and a minimum of three (3) years of related work experience is required.
  2. Ability to utilize Excel or other database software to sort and manage lists and reporting isrequired.
  3. Ability to utilize Word or other word processing tools to prepare and communicate information including mail merge is required.

Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate through their experiences and accomplishments:

  1. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  2. Knowledge of community college policies and procedures.
  3. Working knowledge of Banner or a related software.
  4. Knowledge of the financial aid, including the process for applying (including FAFSA).
  5. Knowledge of basic IRS documentation and tax processes related to financial aid such as IRS 1040 form.
  6. Knowledge of SAP policies.
  7. Knowledge of rules of grammar.
  8. Knowledge of generally accepted office practices and procedures.
  9. Knowledge of general budgeting and accounting processes and procedures and tracking.
  10. Knowledge of FERPA.
  11. Skill in operating a mouse to control a computer.
  12. Skill in operating a computer including tablets.
  13. Skill in utilizing a multi-line phone system.
  14. Skill in operating a fax machine, copier, scanner, calculator, printer, and typewriter.
  15. Ability to make decisions based on correspondence, data or other information.
  16. Ability to utilize and search the internet for information.
  17. Ability to multi-task and prioritize issues.
  18. Ability to maintain confidential information.
  19. Ability to work and communicate with a variety of people from diverse backgrounds.
  20. Ability to utilize email systems to communicate information.
  21. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  22. Ability to operate in a professional manner at all times.
  23. Ability to greet individuals of any background with friendliness, tact and courtesy.
  24. Ability to draft letters and other correspondence.
