Role Profile

The Rohatyn Group (“TRG”) is seeking a highly motivated professional to join the Forestry and Agriculture (“F&A”) investment team. The TRG F&A line of business manages a portfolio of timberlands and farmland in nine countries globally, covering roughly 1.4 million acres. These investments are held through private pooled investment funds and separately managed accounts, which include a wide range of strategies and entities.


This position will be within the F&A Investment Team responsible for the U.S.A. and Latin America, which is based in Boston. The team operates in a collaborative manner and features a flat structure in which all team members are expected to operate across multiple regions, assets, and investment management capacities ranging from in depth price modeling to investor engagement and fundraising. The role will be responsible for providing investment management across a wide range of TRG investments in agriculture and forestry with a primary focus on investments in the U.S.A. and Latin America, together with assistance on other international F&A investment activities on a project-by-project basis. The role may also be responsible for working on a wide range of Environmental and Social (“E&S”) focused and impact investing initiatives. The role will provide assistance and leadership across a wide range of forestry, agriculture, and other natural capital investment strategies, with the opportunity for some specialization based on relevant experience and interests.


Specific areas may include:

  • Acquisitions, operations, and disposition support and leadership including market research, investment modeling, review of due diligence materials, creation of investment memos, oversight of local property managers and operational field visits.
  • Regional and industry relationship building to help source and sell properties, develop offtake agreements, and other business development initiatives.
  • Annual budgeting, valuation, and cash flow forecasting at the investment and portfolio level.
  • Supporting asset specific and companywide Impact and E&S initiatives and impact metric reporting.
  • Producing marketing and investor relations materials, as well as targeted client engagement.



Key Responsibilities

May include the following, but are not limited to:

  1. Work closely with a range of local operating partners, consultants and property managers to execute strategic plans at the operational level.
  2. Collaborate, lead, and develop skills in yourself and others as part of the Investment Team and other regional staff in the development of strategic and tactical plans specific to forest and agriculture asset management. Analyze opportunities to improve investment profitability & returns.
  3. Collaborate as part of the Investment Team with the acquisition of specific investments, including research, mapping, crop budgeting, investment modeling, and Investment Committee engagement.
  4. Create, update, and review detailed investment models for agricultural and forestry investments.
  5. Develop and implement Impact and E&S initiatives to enhance business performance, mitigate risk, and provide for transparent reporting.
  6. Assist TRG marketing and accounting staff on an as-needed basis in all aspects of fund reporting, investment performance and research requests.
  7. Assist with annual property valuation process.

Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree. 10+ years of relevant experience in: agriculture, forestry, and/or investment management.
  • Proficiency with at least two of the following:
  • Investor engagement
  • Forestry based carbon credit generation and carbon markets
  • Economic/financial analysis
  • Investment modeling
  • Real asset transactions
  • Forestry and/or forest products industry operations
  • Proven quantitative skills and an ability to conduct research. Previous experience in forestry, forest products, agriculture, or agribusiness is required. A genuine interest in other areas of timberland, agriculture and natural capital – and a willingness to learn.
  • In-depth understanding of financial measures and concepts
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint required. Proficiency with GIS software and forest optimization software is preferred but not required.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills. Spanish language proficiency is a plus.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally in support of portfolio operations. Prior experience working across numerous geographies is preferred but not required.
