The Midtown Group is assisting one of DC's top international trade boutiques with an exciting International Trade Specialist opening that will offer significant growth and professional development for someone highly skilled and interested in the complex data analysis component of the firm's work.
A successful candidate can expect to be started as a Trade Specialist but to be earmarked for the possibility of being in a lead or senior role over the next few years and eventually work closely with the firm's economists. Those with some international trade experience and strong academic backgrounds in economics or statistics and a passional for data analysis are encouraged to apply ASAP.
** Please note, this is a hybrid role requiring at least two days a week onsite and flexibility for international travel is required. **

1. Summary of Position:
Assist attorneys in a boutique law firm (currently six lawyers) with international trade practice.
The nature of the work will vary depending on the current caseload of the firm. In the past, the work performed by persons in this position has involved (1) trade remedy proceedings before the U.S. Department of Commerce (“DOC”) and U.S. International Trade Commission (“ITC”); (2) related appeals before the U.S. Court of International Trade (“CIT”), U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (“CAFC”) and bi-national NAFTA panels; (3) disputes before the World Trade Organization (“WTO”), (4) trade policy matters for companies and business associations; and (5) business development activities.
2. Principal Activities
a. Case Management
1) Monitoring: Monitor activity across agency and court websites—including those of the DOC, ITC, and CIT—to identify new filings, procedural developments, and regulatory notices relevant to the firm’s cases or potential matters.
2) Calendar Maintenance: Maintain detailed case calendars tracking statutory and procedural deadlines for filings, hearings, and agency actions, ensuring that attorneys and team members remain informed of upcoming obligations.
3) Firm Notification: Prepare twice-daily summaries of key developments in the Firm’s active cases and in related proceedings, including summaries of new filings by other parties and agency actions.
4) Document Management: Maintain organized digital files of submissions, correspondence, and supporting documentation. Log, distribute, and archive incoming materials from agencies, courts, clients, and opposing counsel. Ability to handle confidential business proprietary information (BPI) in accordance with agency administrative protective order (APO) requirements.
5) Document Preparation: Prepare forms, certifications, and procedural submissions for filing with relevant agencies and courts, ensuring compliance with formatting, confidentiality, and filing requirements.
b. Case Support
1) Trade Remedy Proceedings: Assist with preparation and submission of questionnaire responses (including preparing drafts of narrative explanations and other supporting materials and spreadsheets); assist in analysis of issues raised by data submitted in questionnaire responses and in DOC’s analyses; assist with on-site verification of submitted data by DOC officials; assist with preparation of written arguments (including letters addressing procedural, legal and factual issues during the course of the proceeding, as well as formal case briefs and rebuttal briefs); develop arguments, information and graphical
presentations for other trade-law proceedings (including injury analysis before the ITC); and careful proof-reading of documents before submission.
2) Appeal: Assist with review of factual records for appeals, with preparation and presentation of written and oral arguments, and with preparation of evidentiary appendices.
3) WTO Disputes: Assist with factual and legal research relating to issues under the WTO Agreements and with preparation of legal and factual materials for submission to panels and the Appellate Body in disputes under the WTO’s understanding on dispute settlement.
4) Trade Policy: Assist in analyzing legal and factual issues relating to the development of strategies, position papers, and proposals on trade policy issues by companies and business associations.
5) Business Development: Assist in factual research regarding potential business activities and in developing proposals and marketing materials for potential clients
Required Skills:
The preferred candidate will be highly detail-oriented and possess strong analytical, organizational, and written communication skills. The position requires the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with strict deadlines while maintaining accuracy in a fast-paced legal environment.
Preferred qualifications include:
1) College degree in relevant area and strong academic performance.
2)Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
3) Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat and presentation software.
4) Strong professional writing skills, including the ability to draft clear narrative explanations, summaries of record information, and internal memoranda.
4) Strong project management and case coordination skills; ability to manage multiple simultaneous deadlines in complex regulatory proceedings.
6) Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including the ability to work with large datasets and financial information.
7) Understanding basic accounting and financial principles, particularly cost accounting concepts used in trade remedy proceedings (or the ability to learn these concepts).
8) Experience conducting legal, regulatory, or policy research.
9) Foreign language abilities are a plus.
