Job Description

The General Utility Worker is an entry-level production team member who supports multiple functions within a meat-processing facility. This general labor role is not limited to a single task; instead, it involves performing a variety of duties to keep production running smoothly, maintain cleanliness and sanitation, and support both operations and sanitation activities in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all company policies and procedures related to meat processing, including Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulations.
  • Maintain all production areas in clean and sanitary condition throughout the shift.
  • Identify and communicate any issues that may lead to unsanitary conditions in a timely manner to the appropriate supervisor or lead.
  • Remove product and packing materials from the floor to keep work areas clear and safe.
  • Properly dispose of and track inedible products in accordance with established procedures.
  • Separate and remove trash and recycling from production areas to designated collection points.
  • Stage production areas with empty containers and necessary materials for the following shift.
  • Assist with preparing and disassembling equipment for meat-processing operations and sanitation activities.
  • Assist with collecting, opening, and reusing rework product while ensuring proper identification of product and line to prevent cross-contamination and allergen issues.
  • Provide relief for co-workers during breaks, which may include performing duties in other positions as needed.
  • Accurately complete all assigned paperwork and production or sanitation documentation.
  • Assist in training new employees by demonstrating correct procedures and safe work practices.
  • Check in with the appropriate supervisor or lead before leaving at the end of the shift to complete any additional pass-down or shutdown activities.
  • Visually inspect cases to ensure they are properly labeled and have a clear, legible code date.
  • Make basic adjustments to machinery to support smooth production, including changing tape, code dates, ink, paper, film, cardboard, or pallets.
  • Operate a manual hand jack as needed to move materials and product safely.
  • Promptly communicate all equipment malfunctions or performance issues to the appropriate personnel.
  • Prepare supplies and workstations for the next shift to support continuous production flow.
  • Stage ingredients in 50 lb containers to maintain consistent product flow.
  • Arrange meat products according to instructions and specifications.
  • Comb, hang, transport, and stack product continuously as part of the production process.
  • Inspect product on conveyor belts to verify that it meets quality specifications.
  • Perform all job duties accurately, efficiently, and at the expected production pace while maintaining safety and quality standards.

  • Ability to stand and walk for the entire shift in a production environment.
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure product quality, accurate labeling, and proper documentation.
  • Dependability and strong work ethic, consistently reporting to work as scheduled.
  • Ability to follow directions accurately and work under minimal supervision once trained.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to share information clearly and in a timely manner.
  • Ability to multi-task safely in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Willingness to work weekends and overtime hours as business needs require.
  • Comfort working around moving mechanical parts and at high or elevated areas.
  • Ability to use both hands to handle, reach, and manipulate products, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl as needed to perform job tasks.
  • Ability to hear and communicate effectively in a noisy production environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in general labor, general production, packing, or food manufacturing is helpful but not required.
  • Comfort working in both colder (around 30 degrees) and warmer temperature areas within a facility.
  • Ability to learn basic equipment setup, disassembly, and adjustment procedures.
  • Willingness to learn and adhere to strict food safety and sanitation standards.

Work Environment

This role operates in a busy manufacturing environment within a meat-processing facility. Team members regularly work around moving mechanical parts and may perform tasks at high or elevated locations. The facility includes both colder areas, around 30 degrees, and warmer temperature zones, and employees move between these areas throughout the shift. The noise level is typically high, and hearing protection and other personal protective equipment may be required as part of standard safety practices. Work is physically demanding and involves standing and walking constantly, frequently lifting and carrying at least 50 pounds, and using both hands to handle products, tools, and materials. Tasks may require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. The role follows a structured production schedule, which can include weekends and overtime based on operational needs. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Davenport, IA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.
