The City of Ontario Police Department's Air Support Unit has an excellent opportunity for an individual to perform inspection, maintenance and repair of the City’s helicopter fleet as a Helicopter Mechanic. The Helicopter Mechanic will support the Senior Helicopter Mechanic with day-to-day helicopter maintenance and repair operations, while maintaining related inspection and service records.
The Ontario Police Air Support Unit started in 1989, operates three Airbus H125, each equipped with NightSun searchlights of 30 million candlepower, L-3/Wescam forward-looking infrared (FLIR), and appropriate radios for communication and navigation.
The Air Support Unit operates 365 days per year. The Unit is comprised of one Lieutenant/Pilot, one Sergeant/Pilot, four Police Officer Pilots, four Flight Officers, three relief Flight Officer, and two helicopter mechanics.
The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and have knowledge of operating turbo engines, mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems. Additionally they would possess key traits that include strong troubleshooting skills, preventative maintenance practices and the ability to work under high pressure, and physical stamina for lifting and working in confined spaces.
The successful candidate will embody the Department's mission and vision as well as the qualities of a "Five Tool Player" - Leader, Thinker, Communicator, Operator and Public Servant - and the principles of the City's Customer Service Philosophy – Empathy, Respect, and Problem Solving, while also completing all phases of the selection process (seeSupplemental Information for more information).
The following procedures will apply:
- The Eligibility List will consist of both internal and external applicants who meet the qualifications and successfully complete any required selection processes.
- The hiring department has the discretion to consider internal applicants on the Eligibility List prior to considering external candidates on the Eligibility List.

Background Investigation
All appointments to this position are subject to a satisfactory background investigation conducted by the Ontario Police Department. The background investigation will include the following: passing of a polygraph test and the successful completion of a post-offer medical exam (including drug screen). The essential functions typically performed by the Helicopter Mechanic include the following:- Disassembles, repairs, and replaces airframe components, engines, motors, transmissions, rotor assemblies and gear boxes, control assemblies and cable and other equipment systems, components and accessories.
- Pulls and inspects motor shafts, checks and balances weight of rotors, replaces filters, and performs related maintenance and repair.
- Inspects and changes main rotor transmission and tail rotor assembly.
- Inspects drive trains and replaces bearings and other components and performs related repairs.
- Sets up and operates vibration analyzer and other electrical and electronic and electronic testing equipment to evaluate rotor and engine performance, generators and charging system, and other components.
- Identifies potential damage, wear or safety hazards; determines type and extent of necessary repairs and makes corrections or arranges major repairs.
- Installs, adjusts and maintains directional lights and ensures proper operation of infrared and color camera equipment, and related equipment.
- Utilizes welder to perform minor body repairs and to fabricate and attach special equipment; applies anti-corrosion treatments.
- Performs preventive maintenance and routine aircraft service work.
- Rides with pilots to observe and record findings of test flights.
- Make daily, periodic and other inspections in accordance with manufacturer, City, and FM standards and regulations.
- Maintains inspection records, repair records, and flight log.
- Completes FAA certification paperwork of all maintenance performed.
- Orders engine and mechanical parts.
- Maintain parts inventory.
- Observes safety rules and regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education
High school diploma or recognized equivalent.
Experience
One year of diagnosis, repair and maintenance experience involving helicopter equipment, including electrical, mechanical, and electronic components.
Desirable
Two or more years of required experience.Experience in maintaining Airbus turbine powered helicopters. FAA Inspections Authorization Certificate is highly desirable.
License
Valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment are required.
Certification
Valid Mechanic's license with airframe and powerplant rating issued by the Federal Aviation Administration.

- Operational Presentation Exercise: This exercise is designed to assess your knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the operational role of the position. The assessment panel will consist of members of the OPD Staff and will be scored on pass or fail rating. Only candidates who pass the Operational Presentation Exercise will continue to the second part, Oral Board Interview, of the Helicopter Mechanic Evaluation.
- Oral Board Interview: Candidates who successfully passed the Operational Presentation Exercise will participate in the Oral Board Interview that is designed to evaluate each candidate’s readiness for the Helicopter Mechanic by sampling the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for success on the job. The oral board interview panel will becomprised of members of the OPD Staff. Candidates who pass the evaluation will be placed on the eligibility list.
- Background Investigation and Administrative Interview:The hiring department may contact those on the eligibility list for a background interview at any time during the 12 month eligibility list.
