Job Summary:
Certerra is seeking a motivated Geotechnical Staff Engineer to join our Northern Nevada team in Reno, NV. In this role you will support geotechnical investigations, field testing, data analysis, and report preparation on a wide variety of civil, infrastructure, and land development projects. Working under the guidance of senior engineers and project managers, you will gain hands-on experience across all phases of geotechnical engineering practice. Duties:
Field Investigation & Sampling:
Conduct and observe geotechnical borings, test pits, and CPT investigations; log soil and rock samples using USCS and ASTM methods; coordinate safely with drill crews on site.
Laboratory Testing & Data Analysis:
Perform Atterberg limits, sieve analysis, compaction, consolidation, and permeability testing; compile, QC, and interpret field and laboratory data; develop subsurface profiles and cross-sections.
Engineering Analysis & Design Support:
Assist senior engineers with bearing capacity, settlement, slope stability, and liquefaction analyses; support foundation and pavement design using software such as gINT, SLOPE/W, and SETTLE3.
Geotechnical Report Preparation:
Draft boring logs, figures, cross-sections, and tables; assist in preparing geotechnical investigation reports, compaction reports, and construction observation summaries under direction of senior staff.
Construction Observation & Testing:
Perform field observation and materials testing during earthwork and foundation activities; monitor compaction and field acceptance criteria; prepare daily field reports and document contractor compliance.
Education/Qualifications:
Required: B.S. in Civil Engineering or Geological Engineering (geotechnical focus preferred); 1–3 years of geotechnical experience.
Preferred: M.S. in Geotechnical Engineering; experience in geotechnical or civil engineering.
Licensure: Current PE License or ability to obtain license within 6 months of hire.
Technical Skills: Soil mechanics and foundation engineering fundamentals; familiarity with ASTM/AASHTO test standards; proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with gINT, AutoCAD, or GIS a plus.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, lift up to 50 lbs, traverse uneven terrain. Valid driver’s license required.
Certifications/Licenses:
Professional Engineering License or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. OSHA 30, NAQTC Materials Testing is preferred.
