Functional Safety Engineer – Software Implementation

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated Functional Safety Engineer to support the software implementation of safety-critical Battery Management System (BMS) and automotive electronics products. The ideal candidate will possess strong expertise in ISO 26262 functional safety processes, embedded software development, and safety-driven system design. This role will collaborate closely with systems, software, hardware, validation, and cybersecurity teams to ensure compliance with automotive safety standards throughout the product development lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and execute Functional Safety activities in accordance with ISO 26262 for automotive embedded software development.

Develop and maintain Functional Safety work products, including:

Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA)

Functional Safety Concept (FSC)

Technical Safety Concept (TSC)

Safety Requirements Specifications

Safety Cases and Safety Plans

Derive, allocate, and trace safety requirements from system level to software implementation.

Support software architecture reviews to ensure compliance with safety goals and ASIL requirements.

Perform safety analyses including FMEA, FMEDA, FTA, and DFA.

Collaborate with software developers to implement safety mechanisms and diagnostic features.

Support safety verification and validation activities, including test planning, reviews, and compliance assessments.

Participate in safety audits, assessments, and customer reviews.

Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure traceability and consistency across requirements, design, implementation, and testing.

Support ASPICE-compliant development processes and continuous improvement initiatives.

Contribute to cybersecurity and safety co-engineering activities where applicable.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.

5+ years of experience in Functional Safety engineering within the automotive industry.

Strong understanding of ISO 26262 and Automotive Functional Safety lifecycle.

Experience with embedded software development in C/C++.

Knowledge of automotive communication protocols such as CAN, LIN, Ethernet, and UDS.

Experience performing HARA, FMEA, FMEDA, FTA, and safety requirement decomposition.

Familiarity with requirements management and traceability tools such as DOORS, Polarion, Jama, or similar.

Experience with ASPICE processes and automotive software development methodologies.

Strong understanding of software architecture, diagnostics, and fault-tolerant system design.

Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Battery Management Systems (BMS), energy storage systems, or electrified vehicle platforms.

Knowledge of AUTOSAR architecture and safety mechanisms.

Experience with MATLAB/Simulink model-based development.

Functional Safety certification (ISO 26262) preferred.

Familiarity with cybersecurity standards such as ISO/SAE 21434.

Experience working with automotive OEMs or Tier-1 suppliers
