Our client, a Christ-centered nonprofit in Houston, Texas, dedicated to supporting homeless men, women, and children as they work toward stability, independence, and renewed hope, is seeking a Controller. Through services that focus on spiritual growth, education, employment readiness, and life management, our client helps individuals and families build brighter futures.


This Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, financial reporting, and treasury functions. Reporting to the VP Finance this role ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial information through leadership of the general ledger, monthly close process, and preparation of financial statements, while delivering clear, actionable reporting to senior leadership, the Finance Committee, and Board of Trustees. This role partners closely with the VP Finance to manage the annual audit and tax filings, maintain strong internal controls, and ensure compliance with regulatory and donor requirements.


In addition, this professional oversees cash flow forecasting and liquidity management, collaborates with Advancement and Program teams on restricted fund accounting, and supports the budgeting process in partnership with FP&A. The Controller will lead and develop the accounting team while driving process improvements and optimizing financial systems, including Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT and integration with Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge NXT, to enhance efficiency and support the organization’s mission.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Financial Reporting, Accounting and Audits: Responsible for all financial and accounting activities to ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles applicable to non-profit organizations.
  • Treasury and Cash Flow Management: Oversee the organization’s cash flow management and liquidity planning, ensuring adequate funding to meet operational and strategic needs.
  • Internal Controls, Compliance and Risk Management: Maintain and continuously improve the internal control plan, including risk assessment, process documentation, and monitoring activities.
  • Accounting Review and Supervision: Provide first-level review and supervision of the Revenue accounting process: working with the Advancement department to ensure timely gift processing and proper reconciliation. Additional responsibility for revenue accounting associated with grants and related reporting. Supervise and develop accounting staff of three (Revenue, A/P, and general accounting), providing guidance, training, and performance oversight.
  • Properly Expending Temporarily Restricted Funds: Oversee accounting for restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring proper classification, tracking, and reporting.
  • Budgets: Support the Financial, Planning, and Analysis lead with preparation of annual budgets to ensure that all financial aspects of each program have been considered and reviewed for inclusion and completeness.
  • Systems and Financial Operations: Support optimization and greater utilization of Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT accounting software, including partnering with the Advancement team to enhance integration with Blackbaud Raisers Edge NXT.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required; master's degree preferred.
  • Active CPA license strongly preferred
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or management role serving as a controller
  • Demonstrated experience leading monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
  • Hands-on experience with general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, and internal controls
  • Experience reviewing and approving the work of accounting staff
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards, including restricted/unrestricted fund management
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and financial reporting tools
  • Experience collaborating across departments, particularly Advancement, Human Resources and Programs
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge accounting software preferred
