Job Description

The Engineering Lab Assistant supports daily laboratory and pilot manufacturing activities focused on fuel cell development and testing. This hands-on role works closely with engineers and scientists to prepare materials, assemble and test components, maintain equipment, document experiments, and uphold safe and efficient lab operations. It offers an excellent opportunity for someone interested in energy, materials, chemistry, or engineering to gain practical experience in a cutting-edge clean energy environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with laboratory experiments, material preparation, and sample processing related to fuel cell components.
  • Support the assembly and testing of fuel cell stacks and subcomponents according to established procedures.
  • Prepare, label, track, and store chemical and material samples in an organized and compliant manner.
  • Operate basic laboratory equipment such as ovens, furnaces, scales, microscopes, and test fixtures.
  • Collect, record, and organize experimental data in lab notebooks and digital systems with high accuracy.
  • Perform routine lab maintenance, cleaning, and organization to maintain a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Help maintain inventory of consumables, chemicals, and laboratory supplies, including monitoring stock levels and assisting with restocking.
  • Follow established safety protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and quality standards at all times.
  • Support pilot manufacturing and production activities as needed to advance fuel cell development.
  • Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and other team members to support ongoing research and development projects.
Essential Skills
  • Basic laboratory or manufacturing experience in an academic or industry setting.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow documented procedures accurately.
  • Comfort working with tools, equipment, and physical materials in a lab or pilot manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation in both written and digital formats.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.
  • Organizational skills to manage samples, equipment, and lab tasks efficiently.
  • Planning and administrative skills to support laboratory and pilot manufacturing activities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Associate degree, technical certificate, or relevant coursework in Chemistry, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Relevant hands-on experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Experience using common laboratory equipment such as ovens, furnaces, scales, microscopes, and test fixtures.
  • Demonstrated interest in energy, materials, chemistry, engineering, or clean energy technologies.
Work Environment

This role is based fully on site and operates on a 2nd shift schedule with a typical start time of 3:30 p.m. The work takes place in a laboratory and pilot manufacturing environment focused on fuel cell development, where you will regularly work with laboratory equipment, tools, chemicals, and physical materials. The setting emphasizes safety, adherence to standard operating procedures, and collaboration with engineers, scientists, and technicians in a team-based, research and development-focused culture.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Mount Pleasant, PA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
