Job Description
The Director of Pharmacy is responsible for establishing the mission, goals, and action plans for the Pharmacy Department. This leader oversees all pharmacy operations, ensuring standards of care are maintained, policies are followed, and high-quality pharmaceutical services are delivered to all patients.
This role provides leadership and coordination across departments, supervising drug information services, medication safety, and compliance functions. The Director also serves as a key resource for physicians, clinical staff, patients, and families regarding medication-related questions and education. Responsibilities include oversight of pharmacy staff education, regulatory compliance, reporting, formulary management, and participation in hospital committees.
Responsibilities
The Director oversees medication dispensing operations, controlled substance management, inventory control, and regulatory compliance. This includes ensuring proper storage and security of medications, preventing unauthorized dispensing, and maintaining accurate records for all pharmaceutical transactions. The role also involves preparing reports, managing pharmacy budgets, and ensuring adherence to all applicable policies and regulatory requirements.
Additional responsibilities include supervising pharmacy personnel, coordinating staffing schedules, conducting performance evaluations, and overseeing training and development for staff, interns, and students. The Director participates in quality assurance initiatives, medication usage evaluations, and hospital-wide committees such as Pharmacy & Therapeutics, Infection Control, and Medication Management.
The role also ensures compliance with Joint Commission standards, oversees policy development and updates, manages formulary changes, and supports hospital-wide education initiatives related to medication safety and best practices.
