Director of Engineering/Preconstruction/Design

Insight Global
Alexandria, VA

Position Overview

Insight Global is seeking a Director of Engineering to support mechanical and plumbing design efforts across design-build projects nationwide. While the title is “Director,” this role is best suited for a senior-level engineer ready to take the next step rather than a traditional enterprise director. This is a growth-oriented position with the opportunity to build a team over time and take increasing ownership across engineering, preconstruction, and technical consulting functions.

This role requires a hands-on understanding of building systems, strong collaboration skills, and comfort operating in both technical and client-facing environments.

Key Responsibilities

Design / Build Project Delivery

  • Manage internal and external engineering resources to deliver design-build projects
  • Develop schematic-level designs and project approaches for SageWater offerings
  • Oversee work performed by external consultants
  • Produce in-house design documents when appropriate
  • Draft contract exhibits defining scope and technical requirements

Pipe Testing & Technical Consulting

  • Take ownership of SageWater’s Pipe Testing function
  • Provide consultative engineering support to prospective clients (fee-based)
  • Perform on-site investigations related to engineering analysis
  • Complete calculations, equipment sizing, system evaluations, and technical reviews

Project & Permit Support

  • Review permit drawings and construction documents for quality and scope
  • Support permit acquisition efforts across U.S. projects
  • Partner with preconstruction and operations teams to understand project constraints

Business Development & Growth

  • Provide mechanical and plumbing technical support across the organization
  • Support project pursuits and pre-award site visits
  • Assist in identifying follow-on work from service clients
  • Balance reactive technical support with proactive growth initiatives

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field (preferred)
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE strongly preferred; path to PE considered)
  • Minimum 3 years post-graduation in building systems design/engineering
  • Strong understanding of:
  • HVAC and plumbing systems
  • Pump systems and fluid flow
  • Psychrometric fundamentals (air quality and system behavior)
  • Experience working with or alongside mechanical/plumbing contractors
  • Familiarity with ICC codes and energy standards
  • Experience with industry-standard design and load calculation software
  • Ability to manage internal teams and external consultants

Work Environment & Travel

  • Mostly stationary role
  • Travel approximately once per month
  • Some regional travel (short trips)
  • Occasional multi-day travel across the U.S.
  • Office is open; team commonly works remotely Wednesdays and Fridays

Other notes

  • Projects often occur in occupied buildings, including residential environments
  • Frequent interaction with:
  • HOA boards (AOAOs in Hawaii)
  • Owners and managers overseeing large capital improvement projects
  • Requires comfort working with diverse and sometimes challenging stakeholder groups
  • Multifamily background not required
  • Resume stability is important; job hopping is a red flag
  • Professional involvement is a plus (CIPE, ASPE, ASHRAE)
  • Candidates from design-build firms (e.g., Southland-type environments) are a strong fit
  • Compensation flexibility at the high end for the right candidate
