Role Overview
This role is not a traditional IT support position.
It focuses exclusively on the physical restoration, inspection, and failure analysis of damaged data center hardware.
The engineer will:
- Review damaged hardware
- Document physical conditions
- Perform basic failure analysis
- Repair or restore components
- Triage tickets submitted from data center teams
Project Purpose
Google’s quality team aims to reduce and minimize hardware damage in global data centers. This role supports that mission by:
- Reviewing hardware quality issues
- Performing first-level investigation
- Completing root cause analysis
- Identifying trends and documenting issues
- Submitting bugs to partner teams
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Manage and triage a quality issue ticket queue
- Ensure tickets contain proper information; gather missing data
- Perform first-level root cause analysis on data center hardware issues
- Provide recommendations or resolutions for simple investigations
- Review fleet data to identify recurring failures
- Create and document bugs for partner teams
- Support continuous improvement by analyzing manufacturing/field data
- Present performance data to stakeholders in a clear and concise manner
- Edit, improve, or create technical documents (repair guides, deployment guides, etc.)
Mandatory Skills
- Bachelor’s degree (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Materials Engineering OR equivalent experience)
- 3+ years in:
- Computing hardware quality
- Product engineering
- Test engineering
- Hardware issue resolution
- Ability to do basic data analysis (Excel, data entry fully acceptable)
- SQL / Python / JMP experience is nice to have but NOT required
- Strong people skills and ability to influence
- Comfortable working hands-on with hardware components

Non-Essential but Valuable Skills
- Experience repairing server/storage/networking hardware
- Familiarity with spreadsheets or databases
- Experience in hardware development labs
- Experience in data center environments
Additional Notes
- Relocation: Allowed
