Role Overview

This role is not a traditional IT support position.

It focuses exclusively on the physical restoration, inspection, and failure analysis of damaged data center hardware.

The engineer will:

  • Review damaged hardware
  • Document physical conditions
  • Perform basic failure analysis
  • Repair or restore components
  • Triage tickets submitted from data center teams

Project Purpose

Google’s quality team aims to reduce and minimize hardware damage in global data centers. This role supports that mission by:

  • Reviewing hardware quality issues
  • Performing first-level investigation
  • Completing root cause analysis
  • Identifying trends and documenting issues
  • Submitting bugs to partner teams

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Manage and triage a quality issue ticket queue
  • Ensure tickets contain proper information; gather missing data
  • Perform first-level root cause analysis on data center hardware issues
  • Provide recommendations or resolutions for simple investigations
  • Review fleet data to identify recurring failures
  • Create and document bugs for partner teams
  • Support continuous improvement by analyzing manufacturing/field data
  • Present performance data to stakeholders in a clear and concise manner
  • Edit, improve, or create technical documents (repair guides, deployment guides, etc.)

Mandatory Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Materials Engineering OR equivalent experience)
  • 3+ years in:
  • Computing hardware quality
  • Product engineering
  • Test engineering
  • Hardware issue resolution
  • Ability to do basic data analysis (Excel, data entry fully acceptable)
  • SQL / Python / JMP experience is nice to have but NOT required
  • Strong people skills and ability to influence
  • Comfortable working hands-on with hardware components

  • Aerospace (mechanical/electrical testing & failure analysis)
  • Automotive (quality, failure analysis, hardware/mechanical diagnostic work)
  • IT hardware techs with hands-on repair experience
  • Electronics hardware repair
  • Lab / R&D environments

Non-Essential but Valuable Skills

  • Experience repairing server/storage/networking hardware
  • Familiarity with spreadsheets or databases
  • Experience in hardware development labs
  • Experience in data center environments

Additional Notes

  • Relocation: Allowed
  • High potential for extension: Data centers are growing and may open internal opportunities

Basic data analysis (Excel, data entry) is acceptable
