OVERALL PURPOSE/FUNCTION:
Responding to member requests for insurance coverage information in a timely manner and with written work that includes citations to authoritative sources that support the work. Legal research and writing on claims coverage issues that arise in the field of property and casualty insurance. Contributing to the PLRB database of reference materials on insurance coverage issues.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
1. Legal research and writing.
2. Timely and professional communication with employees of member companies in a manner that clearly and succinctly responds to their inquiries.
3. Incorporate citations to laws, regulations, case law, secondary authority, and persuasive authority to support all research and writings.
4. Contribute professional writings to the PLRB database of reference materials.
5. Update and edit existing written work in PLRB’s database of reference materials.
6. Promptly log records of completed work into PLRB tracking systems.
7. Complete all tasks and projects with minimal direct supervision and be able to complete such work in compliance with deadlines.
8. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
Education and/or Experience
· Law degree from an accredited law school. At least 1-3 years property or casualty claims-related legal experience.
Professional Designations/Licensure/Certificates
· Must be licensed by the State of Illinois as an attorney and be in good standing with the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission (ARDC). CPCU or AIC designations are a plus.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
· Outstanding Lexis legal research skills.
· Excellent demonstrated legal writing skills.
· Ability to perform work in compliance with writing style and citation guidelines established by PLRB.
· Excellent technical and Web research skills.
· Strong teamwork and project management skills.
· Strong computer-user skills, including expert-level competence with Microsoft Word. Experience with database management is a plus.
JOB DEMANDS
The job requires long hours in front of a computer screen and long hours at a desk or desk alternative, use of a keyboard and mouse, and use of a telephone.
The job requires concentration, reading, writing, analyzing, organizing, interpreting, communicating, decision-making, and maintaining confidentiality.
PRIMARY INTERFACES
Internal
PLRB position reports to SVP – Coverage Legal Services
Position coordinates closely with all other legal and IT staff.
External
Contact with member companies, outside vendors, affiliates, and technical and legal resource experts across the industry.
