Job Title: Controller – Upstream Oil & Gas
About the Role
We are seeking a seasoned and driven contract Controller with deep expertise in upstream oil & gas accounting to lead our accounting function. This role is a unique opportunity for a hands-on leader who can own day-to-day operations while also elevating processes, controls, and team culture.
The organization is transitioning from an intense IPO phase, and we’re looking for a Controller who can bring stability, accountability, and a forward-looking mindset—helping to reset and strengthen the accounting environment while maintaining high performance standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage all day-to-day upstream accounting operations, including:
- Revenue accounting
- Joint Interest Billing (JIB)
- Property accounting
- Act as the subject matter expert for upstream operational accounting, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance
- Lead the design, implementation, and ongoing management of SOX controls, ensuring audit readiness and adherence to regulatory standards
- Drive process improvements, standardization, and automation across accounting workflows
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and direction to the accounting team, fostering a culture of accountability, resilience, and continuous improvement
- Partner with executive leadership and cross-functional teams to deliver timely, accurate financial insights
- Help rebuild and elevate team culture, bringing a steady, solutions-oriented leadership style following a high-pressure IPO environment
What We’re Looking For
- Extensive experience in upstream oil & gas accounting, including revenue, JIB, and property accounting
- Proven leadership experience in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role
- Strong ability to adapt to evolving business environments and lead through change
- Demonstrated commitment to ownership, accountability, and team development
- Experience working within SOX-compliant organizations, including implementation and oversight of controls
- A hands-on leader who can balance strategic thinking with operational execution
Technical Skills
- Experience with Enertia accounting software
- Advanced proficiency in Excel, including:
- Pivot tables
- VLOOKUPs and similar analytical functions
- Familiarity with leveraging AI tools (e.g., Claude) to enhance reporting, streamline processes, and drive efficiency
