The Community Service Officer is a non-certified uniformed (but not armed) member of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. This position is required to perform non-hazardous duties that relate to public safety with the primary responsibility to promote a safe and healthy atmosphere in the community.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - High School graduate or the equivalent.
- Must be a least 18 years of age.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D Driver's license or equivalent out of state driver's license or ability to obtain by time of hire.
- Enrolled, attending, or completed school for law enforcement, criminal justice, or related field.
- Community Service Officer must enroll in a POST approved (Peace Officer Standards Training) law enforcement program by the date of appointment. This enrollment must be maintained throughout employment until the date of graduation from the program. The Community Service Officer position is a transition position into Deputy Sheriff for Washington County. A Community Services Officer must qualify and be appointed as a Deputy Sheriff within the anniversary date of four-year service in this class.

SELECTION TECHNIQUE:Your training and experience will be rated based on the required application material submitted and the top scoring candidates will be forwarded to the hiring department for further consideration.
HOURS / DAYS:Approximately 20 hours per week. Flexible days and hours based on CSO and department needs, including weekends.
ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE:$24.71 Hourly

If at any point it is determined by the department that a Community Services Officer does not meet the qualifications or physical requirements for Deputy Sheriff, the Community Services Officer may be separated at any time. If no examination is held for Deputy Sheriff during those four years, appointment as a Community Services Officer may be extended until such examination is held and completed.
Offers of employment will be contingent upon successfully passing a criminal history background check prior to beginning employment with Washington County Sheriff's Office.
Must have no felony convictions, including pardons and/or expungements, no criminal convictions of gross misdemeanor or equivalent level, no physical assault, domestic assault, or eluding the police convictions.

1. Take oral and written orders as assigned.
2. Handle minor traffic accidents and assist in traffic and crowd control.
3. Participate in community engagement activities.
4. Monitor and empty medication drop boxes.
5. Handle animal complaints including investigating complaints, impounding animals, and citing owners in violation of city code.
6. Patrol for and resolve violations of municipal ordinances including but not limited to junk cars, burning violations, trash violations, parking violations, and violations relating to use of public parks and playgrounds. Patrol to observe other law violations and report them to a police officer on duty.
7. Assist in movement and maintenance functions of the Sheriff’s Office vehicles for servicing, repair, and cleaning.
8. As assigned, assist investigative aide with property room functions such as receiving, cataloging, and disposing of property and evidence.
9. Assist in movement and maintenance of radio equipment.
10. Assist with record keeping functions related to, and compatible with, vehicle and equipment maintenance.
11. Perform as the animal control officer, which includes but is not limited to, licensing, apprehension, and detention.
12. Detect and reports criminal or suspicious activity during routine patrol.
13. Patrol for and enforces violations of municipal ordinances, such as junk vehicles, burning violations, noxious weeds, damaged signing, and unacceptable conduct in parks in coordination with other city enforcement officials.
14. Upon direction, complete initial complaint reports for calls taken.
15. Assist in major crime scenes, riots, disasters, and accidents by directing and controlling citizens and motor vehicle traffic, or as otherwise directed.
16. Assist clerical staff as directed.
17. Transport property and evidence as required. Provide general assistance on non-hazardous activities in all areas of police work.
