We are seeking a dynamic Communications Specialist who will play a central role in shaping and elevating the Port KC brand. This individual will support communications, marketing, community efforts and storytelling, bringing our projects, partnerships, and impact to life across platforms. This role is ideal for a creative and strategic communicator who can manage day-to-day communications while also thinking big about how we tell our story. You will be responsible for strengthening our brand presence, managing social media, and crafting compelling written content that reflects the mission and momentum of Port KC. This role collaborates across departments and with external partners to ensure clear, consistent, and impactful messaging.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, write, and distribute internal and external communications
  • Manage social media strategy, content creation, and platform engagement
  • Plan, design, and implement communications materials, including print, digital, and web content
  • Research, write, and publish content including press releases, articles, newsletters, board materials, and presentations
  • Support and execute strategic communications and marketing initiatives
  • Coordinate events and support programming, including activities at Berkley Riverfront
  • Assist with media relations and respond to public and stakeholder inquiries
  • Maintain PR and communications tools and systems
  • Attend community meetings and support stakeholder engagement efforts
  • Provide communications support for cross-departmental initiatives, including RFP/Q processes
  • Other duties as assigned


What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 3–5 years of experience in communications, marketing, branding, or digital media
  • Exceptional writing and storytelling skills with the ability to adapt tone for different audiences
  • Experience managing and growing social media platforms
  • Strong understanding of brand management and content strategy
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with event planning and coordination
  • Photography and/or videography skills
  • Design experience (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign, etc.)
  • Spanish language proficiency (written and verbal)
