The Communication Officer is a uniformed position that requires the ability to work under significant stress in a control center inside the detention facility. This position works under general supervision, and their work significantly impacts the safety of Juvenile Services staff and detention residents.
The Communication Officer must successfully complete: interview process, physical and workfitness examination, drug screen, background investigation, and fingerprinting.
- Receives and documents incoming phone calls to the Smith County Juvenile Attention Center Master Control Unit from the public and law enforcement.
- Receives and documents radio communication from Detention and Probation Officers.
- Monitors video cameras of the facility grounds, both inside and out.
- Operates security system to engage and disengage electronic doors in the detention facility.
- Must be able to read, write and speak English fluently.
- Must be able to work various shifts, holidays and weekends.
- Communicate effectively and remain calm when speaking to or with a person in distress.
- Perform data entry for spreadsheets, reports, etc.
- Use professional courtesy, discretion and sound judgment when engaging in any contact with co-workers, customers, vendors, visitors and/or other Smith County employees.
- Maintain confidentiality of business knowledge and employee information.
- Maintain professional relations while engaging in job-related tasks.
- Cooperate with others to resolve conflict and achieve goals.
- Maintain a pleasant attitude while leaving personal business outside of the workplace.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
High School diploma or G.E.D.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Daily sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, pulling, reaching and lifting of items possibly weighing 40 pounds or more.
The Communication Officer must be able to sit for long periods of time, walk up and down a flight of stairs and operate a variety of office equipment such as computers, two-way radios, multi-line telephones, digital recording equipment and security system.
