College Intern (Police Department)

The Pittsburg Police Department is seeking a College Intern who is motivated and detail-oriented to support the Investigative Unit. This internship provides hands-on experience in law enforcement with the opportunity to learn directly from experienced sworn and non-sworn staff. Learning outcomes include exposure to police operations, practical experience applying classroom knowledge in a professional law enforcement setting, and networking opportunities with staff.

This role is designed for local college students pursuing degrees in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Political Science, Public Administration, Forensic Science, or related field.Flexible work hours are provided to accommodate school schedule (this job is not remote due to the nature of the responsibilities).

Interns will assist with a variety of duties, which may include:

  • Assisting with case file organization, documentation, and data entry
  • Observing and shadowing investigators during day-to-day operations
  • Conducting research on cases, crime trends, and related issues
  • Supporting evidence management and records requests (non-sensitive tasks)
  • Assisting with community outreach, crime prevention programs, and presentations
  • Attending briefings, training sessions, or court proceedings as permitted
  • Performing other administrative and investigative support tasks as assigned

Selected candidates are limited to work up to 999 hours per fiscal year.

The City of Pittsburg is a full-service city following the council-manager form of government. The City has approximately 300 full time employees and at times, up to 350 employees total (depending on the season). Pittsburg is currently organized into the following departments: City Management, Community and Economic Development (Building, Economic Development, Code Enforcement, and Planning), Community Services (Housing Authority, Pittsburg Power Company, and the Successor Agency to the former Redevelopment Agency, CDBG/Housing Rehabilitation, Environmental Services, Waterfront Administration, and Property Management),Recreation, Human Resources, Finance, Police, and Public Works (Engineering, Operations/Maintenance, Utilities, Facilities, Parks, and Water Treatment).

Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in a college or university program, majoring in criminal justice or a related field of study
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with integrity
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple task
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to pass a background check and fingerprint clearance

College Intern Salary:

  • $16.50 per hour for those who have not completed two years of education.
  • $17.50 per hour for those who have completed a minimum of two years of education.
  • $19.00 per hour for those who have completed a Bachelor's or higher degree.

New Hire Paperwork:After completion of the background/pre-employment process, successful candidates will complete new hire onboarding which includes paperwork, reviewing applicable policies, and training.
