About the Role



This is not a traditional desk-bound legal role. As Assistant General Counsel, you’ll serve as a strategic business partner, working closely with senior leadership and operational teams to drive transactions forward while safeguarding the organization’s legal and risk position. You’ll have the opportunity to make a measurable impact across:



  • Commercial leasing and real estate transactions
  • Development projects and acquisitions/dispositions
  • Residential and operating company matters
  • Corporate contracts, governance, and strategic initiatives
  • Dispute resolution and outside counsel management


This role is ideal for someone who is commercially minded, solution-oriented, and thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.



Responsibilities



  • Lead negotiation and execution of commercial leases and real estate transactions
  • Draft and manage a wide range of agreements (PSAs, leases, vendor contracts, etc.)
  • Partner with business leaders to structure deals and mitigate risk
  • Support residential portfolios, collections strategy, and operational compliance
  • Manage litigation strategy and outside counsel relationships
  • Help build standardized processes, playbooks, and legal frameworks across the organization


Qualifications



  • J.D. and active Illinois bar admission (Wisconsin a plus)
  • 5+ years of experience in real estate transactions and/or commercial leasing


Required Skills



  • Strong drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with sound judgment
  • A proactive partner who can balance legal risk with business goals
  • Experience in both law firm and in-house settings preferred
