Job Summary
The Assistant General Counsel is a leader responsible for overseeing and delivering comprehensive contract support across the organization. This role leads the contracts function, manages and develops a small legal support team, and serves as a trusted legal partner to executive and operational leaders. The Assistant General Counsel anticipates legal and business needs, provides practical, actionable legal guidance in fast-based environment, and works closely with the General Counsel on complex legal matters as needed. This is a hybrid role based in Richmond, Virginia.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Contracts & Legal Support
- Provide legal support for all contract matters across the organization, including review, drafting, negotiation, interpretation, and risk mitigation.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for leadership and operational teams on contract-related issues.
- Anticipate contract needs and proactively advise internal stakeholders with practicable business-oriented guidance.
- Develop and maintain standard contract templates, playbooks, and processes.
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and manage the Contract Specialist and Paralegal.
- Set expectations, allocate work, and support professional development.
- Foster a collaborative and service-oriented legal team culture.
Relationship Management & Cross-Functional Partnership
- Build and maintain strong relationships with leaders and teams across the organization.
- Serve as a strategic legal advisor aligned with operational goals.
- Communicate complex legal issues clearly and practically.
General Counsel Collaboration
- Support the General Counsel on litigation management as needed.
- Assist with other high-risk or complex legal matters at the direction of the General Counsel.
Governance, Compliance & Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve contract processes and workflows.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and organizational policies, including healthcare regulatory requirements.
- Support special projects and initiatives as assigned.
Job Requirements
Required
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- Active license to practice law in Virginia or the ability to obtain a corporate counsel certificate from the Virginia Board of Bar Examiners.
- Minimum of five (5) years of legal experience, either in a law firm or in-house, with at least three (3) years of experience focusing on healthcare law.
- Strong contract drafting, negotiation, and risk assessment skills.
- Substantial experience applying healthcare regulatory law in a transactional and operational context, including regular involvement with laws and regulations such as HIPAA, Stark Law, Anti‑Kickback Statute, False Claims Act, and related federal and state healthcare compliance requirements.
- Demonstrated people leadership experience.
- Strong business judgment and communication skills.
Preferred
- Prior in-house counsel experience.
