Overview:

A publicly traded, growth-oriented real estate company is seeking an Assistant General Counsel to join its collaborative in-house legal team. This is a high-visibility role supporting a premier portfolio of retail and mixed-use assets across major U.S. markets.

This position is ideal for a commercially minded real estate attorney who enjoys working closely with business teams and wants to build deep expertise in leasing and property operations within a sophisticated, fast-moving platform.

Responsibilities:

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of commercial leasing documents, including leases, amendments, assignments, and access agreements.
  • Advise internal teams on lease interpretation, tenant defaults, and compliance with use restrictions and co-tenancy provisions.
  • Manage and coordinate bankruptcy-related legal matters impacting landlord rights, including review of filings and related motions.
  • Collaborate with outside counsel on diverse operational and transactional issues.
  • Support a wide range of transactional legal matters, including acquisitions, dispositions, financings, and joint ventures.
  • Independently manage a high-volume transaction load, ensuring deadlines are met and results are delivered efficiently.
  • Develop cross-functional expertise across leasing, operations, and acquisition diligence within a highly collaborative legal environment.


Must-Have Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) and current bar admission.
  • 3+ years of experience practicing law in commercial real estate at a law firm or in-house


Preferred:

  • Experience with retail or shopping center leasing
  • Familiarity with co-tenancy, use restrictions, and operating covenants
  • Exposure to tenant bankruptcies or landlord-side issues
