Associate degree from a regionally accredited institution in the laboratory (or related) field.
Highly qualified in the application of computer technology.
Sufficient interpersonal skills to be effective in the position.
Higher-level academic credentials (e.g., bachelor’s degree or above) in a laboratory or related field.
Under the direction of the Associate Dean of Business Careers, the lead Agribusiness instructional staff, and the biology faculty, the Agriculture & Science Lab Technician provides support to college instructional staff & faculty by giving laboratory, greenhouse, facilities, and field assistance as specified by the instructional staff and faculty. In order to accomplish the objectives of the position, the Agriculture & Science Lab Technician performs the following functions:
Essential Duties:
Maintains greenhouses for the Agribusiness program
Maintains other support for projects for the Agribusiness programs to include assistance with livestock, plants, and other projects within the program
Leads labs for the Agribusiness courses
Provides assistance to the Agribusiness instructional staff for courses
Assists students in the Agribusiness program with projects related to the program
Assists the Agribusiness instructor with lab preparation for all Agribusiness courses
Assists with outreach for the Agribusiness and science programs
Sets up greenhouse materials for lab classes
Maintains the watering, fertilizing and other support needed to ensure greenhouses and the plants in the greenhouse are thriving
Assembles materials and equipment required in the greenhouses and other agricultural labs.
Prepares chemicals, mixtures, and solutions
Prepares microbial cultures to support the Agribusiness program
Restores equipment and unused materials after completion of the labs
Performs final clean up and preparation of the labs/greenhouses for the next class
Sets up each laboratory (laboratories for one or more of the following subjects: Principles of Biology, General Biology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology) including the following tasks (as appropriate):
Assembly of materials and equipment required in the lab
Preparation of chemicals, mixtures, and solutions
Preparation of microbial cultures
Restoration of equipment and unused materials after completion of the lab
Final clean up and preparation of laboratory room for the next class
Performs highly skilled laboratory functions and other technical duties in support of coursework.
Sets up, maintains, and organizes student laboratories
Assists students with setting up experiments and other learning exercises, and with the use of equipment and materials
Maintains appropriate safety and hygiene standards
Maintains required documentation related to laboratory and class activities
Manages equipment and materials inventories for both Agribusiness lab courses and biology lab courses
Assists instructional staff and faculty with technology components of courses
Assists instructional staff and faculty with assessment activities
Assists instructional staff and faculty with curriculum processes/documentation
Assists instructional staff and faculty with service activities
Participate in public school and university articulation, advisement, and recruitment programs of the College
Works in the day, evening, on Saturday, at unconventional times or via distance learning as necessary
Demonstrates commitment to the community college "open door" philosophy and the comprehensive community college concept
Participates in community service activities
Carries out institutional effectiveness activities and participates in the life of the college (e.g. serves on committees, conducts advisement, participates in activities)
A completed Southeastern Community College application (located on the SCC website), a resume, a letter of interest addressing the requirements, and educational transcripts (unofficial copies of transcripts will be sufficient for the screening process, but official copies must be submitted prior to employment) must be submitted to the college Human Resources Office in order for applicants to be considered for this position.
