Zoning and Code Enforcement Planner

Performs difficult professional work in the Zoning Division regarding the enforcement of zoning and code regulations. Assists in carrying out current planning and zoning administration functions. Prepares reports to be acted upon by the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and/or Board of Supervisors. Performs other duties as assigned.~ Investigates code and zoning complaints by conducting field investigations
~ Determines if code and zoning complaints are violations of the County Code and/or Zoning Ordinance, and works to resolve violations with property owners within established time limits
~ Prepares evidence, files charges, and testifies in court if violations are not resolved by property owners within established time limits
~ Participates in the review and analysis of variance applications
~ Appears before the Board of Zoning Appeals, other County departments, public agencies, civic organizations to present, discuss, or interpret specific code and zoning policies and ordinances as they apply to current community concerns
~ Assists in the preparation of zoning and development regulations
~ Prepares maps, graphs, charts and illustrations
~ Assists in maintaining zoning maps and documents
~ Assists citizens with planning and zoning matters
~ May assist in site plan and/or other plan review processes
~ May prepare staff reports for land use and variance applications and present those before the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals
~ Performs other duties as assignedEducation:
Required: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in urban and regional planning or related field, or combination of training, education, and considerable experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the work described.

Experience:
Preferred: One (1) year of experience in local government planning and zoning.

Certifications/Licenses:
Required: Valid Virginia driver’s license with good driving record.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General knowledge of urban and regional planning principles and practices. Understanding of land use concepts. Skill in research and analysis of planning and zoning information. Ability to prepare maps and graphic exhibits. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally, and in writing; and relate well to the public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, citizens and other government officials. Skill in the use of standard computer hardware and software including Microsoft Office and ArcGIS.

None
