We are seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and community-minded leader to join our team as the Youth Services Senior Librarian at the Chinn Park Library in Woodbridge, VA. As the lead architect of engagement for our youngest patrons (ages 0–18) and their families, you will have a unique platform to re-imagine how we serve our vibrant community.

This role is ideal for a visionary who wants to combine a deep commitment to public service with a passion for high-quality, innovative programming. You will lead the Youth Services department with heart, managing a dedicated staff and collaborating as a key member of the branch management team. From facilitating dynamic on-site programs to engaging the community through bold outreach, you will ensure that every child who walks through our doors finds a world of inspiration.

Currently, Chinn Park is undergoing a landmark, large-scale renovation and you will be a vital part of the leadership team that re-introduces the community to everything a modern Chinn Park has to offer.


About This Role:

  • Supervise Youth Services librarians and technician, and actively engage in the personnel process including hiring, training and coaching, scheduling, preparing and conducting evaluations and the discipline process
  • Actively participate as a part of the branch management team, and serve as person in charge on one night a week, alternating weekends, and on an as needed basis
  • Respond to patron concerns and enforce library code of conduct
  • Interpret and explain library policy and procedures to patrons
  • Work with Youth Services staff to develop programming, services, and classes for patrons
  • Oversee the Youth Services programming budget and order supplies and other equipment to support the youth services programming and create exciting spaces for our patrons.
  • Collect programming statistics and prepare monthly reports for the department
  • Regularly work at the integrated service desk and assist patrons with circulation, reader’s advisory, reference, and technology assistance
  • Build and maintain community partnerships
  • Serve as a part of the Youth Services system-wide team providing feedback about programming, services, and policies and procedures.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Master's degree in library science and 1 year of Public Library experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a supervisory role


Preferences:

  • Three or more years of public library experience.
  • One year of supervisory experience, including staff scheduling, coaching, performance management, and personnel processes
  • Experience in managing the day-to-day operations of a public library facility, including oversight of opening/closing procedures, coordinating maintenance requests, and providing procedural feedback.
  • Experience with budget management, including monitoring expenditures, resource allocation, and providing financial forecasts for departmental services.
  • Experience planning, implementing, and evaluating high-impact programming and outreach initiatives for patrons of all ages.
  • Excellent customer service skills including policy interpretation, public service, and managing difficult situations
  • Experience with collection maintenance
  • Knowledge of event management/summer reading tracking platforms. Working experience with Microsoft Office


Special Requirements:The position may require travel to other branches within the system. A DMV check will be conducted for employees who drive while on County business.


Work Schedule:

This is a full time, exempt position located at the Chinn Park Library. Chinn Park Library is open 7 days a week: Monday – Wednesday 10am-8pm, Thursday – Saturday 10am-5pm, and Sunday 1:00pm -5:00 pm. The schedule includes days, one evening a week and rotating weekends. Flexibility is paramount. Schedule may vary depending upon the needs of the library.


Hiring Salary Range:

$70,921.50 - $84,444.75 / annually
