Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Insurance Billing and Follow‑Up Specialist II to support automation and claims resolution efforts within the business office. This role focuses heavily on workers’ compensation denial follow‑up, complex claims investigation, and payer communication.

This is a fully remote opportunity, ideally suited for candidates located in Iowa, Illinois, or Wisconsin, though Midwest candidates will be considered. The role requires someone who can hit the ground running with minimal formal training.

Location: 100% Remote (Midwest preferred)

Job Type: Contract (6–9 months, with potential to extend)

Schedule: Standard business hours, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM CST or 7:00 AM–4:00 PM CST

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform full billing and follow‑up functions for denied, rejected, pending, or unpaid claims
  • Investigate payment delays caused by missing information, denials, or lack of payer response
  • Resolve billing errors and edits, including Stop Bills and DNBs, to ensure timely claim submission
  • Verify insurance eligibility and claim status with third‑party payers
  • Review payment denials and discrepancies and take corrective action as needed
  • Submit replacement, corrected, cancelled, and appealed claims to third‑party payers
  • Perform charge corrections to ensure services are billed accurately
  • Work accounts within assigned Epic work queues in accordance with departmental standards
  • Respond to patient and customer service inquiries related to billing issues
  • Contact patients for additional information required to process claims and payments
  • Communicate directly with commercial, government, and workers’ compensation payers
  • Provide feedback to management on recurring issues, payer trends, and workflow improvements
Required Qualifications (Must Have)
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Workers’ compensation denial follow‑up experience (required)
  • Experience working with payer platforms
  • Epic experience
  • Strong understanding of insurance billing and revenue cycle workflows
  • Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment
  • Dedicated, reliable work‑from‑home space
Work Environment
  • All equipment provided (2 monitors, keyboard, mouse, headset)
  • Collaboration via Microsoft Teams; availability and responsiveness required
  • Camera‑on participation expected for team meetings
Training & Performance Expectations
  • Minimal formal training; on‑the‑job learning with structured weekly work plans
  • 90‑day learning curve to fully ramp up
  • Expected productivity of 5.5 accounts per hour once trained
  • Epic activity monitored; gaps over 20 minutes may be reviewed by leadership
  • Must remain available and responsive in Teams during working hours

This is a Contract position based out of West Des Moines, IA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.50/hr.
