Job Description

This role offers the opportunity to perform a wide range of welding and fabrication tasks in a wood and steel processing manufacturing operation that supports commercial construction projects across North America. You will use multiple welding processes and shop equipment to cut, fabricate, assemble, and finish steel components and structures for both plant operations and customer needs, while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, and accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily safety risk assessments of processes and work areas, and follow, update, and help create clear job instructions.
  • Read, interpret, and verify blueprints and detailed drawings for assemblies, ensuring that all dimensions and specifications are correct.
  • Use a variety of cutting equipment, including bandsaw, iron worker, acetylene torch, plasma torch, cold saw, lathe, mill, and drill press to cut and prepare materials.
  • Perform welding using arc stick, MIG, and TIG processes, with a variety of wire and gas combinations, to join parts and assemble steel structures for plant and customer requirements.
  • Operate cranes, lifts, and adjustable platforms to safely hold, lift, rotate, and move heavy steel parts that can exceed 50 pounds.
  • Grind, sand, and clean steel parts to prepare them for assembly, welding, and finishing.
  • Prepare parts for painting, apply paint as needed, and finish assemblies with banding, stickers, and box materials for shipment or internal use.
  • Organize and identify parts based on drawing parts lists, ensuring that all components are correctly labeled and staged for fabrication and assembly.
  • Use hand tools and shop power tools safely and effectively to support fabrication, assembly, and finishing activities.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area, and support continuous improvement efforts in safety, quality, and productivity.
Essential Skills
  • Knowledge of and ability to safely use hand tools, including drill motors, grinders, roto hammers, reciprocating saws, portable band saws, and circular saws, as well as familiarity with a standard crew toolbox.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use shop power tools such as band saws, chop saws, metal munchers, drill presses, shears, brakes, and power threading tools.
  • Ability to safely use oxygen-acetylene cutting outfits, electrical welders, gas-powered arc welders, and MIG wire feed welders.
  • Proficiency in cutting and welding steel and aluminum using MIG welding processes.
  • Ability to read blueprints, perform layout work, and fabricate parts and assemblies based on drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to organize, identify, and track parts listed on drawing parts lists to support efficient assembly and fabrication.
  • Approximately 2,000 hours, or about 24 months, of fabrication and shop work-related experience and/or training preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED is a plus.
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • Experience with grinding, assembly, and accurate use of a tape measure.
  • Experience with TIG and TIG welding is beneficial.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Certifications in welding or related trades may substitute for portions of the experience requirements, based on management discretion.
  • Experience with TIG welding and stick welding is a strong plus.
  • Mechanical and electrical aptitude or experience is advantageous.
  • Prior experience in truss manufacturing is a plus.
  • Ability to work safely around moving mechanical equipment and in a high-noise, manufacturing environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, accurate welds and assemblies.

Work Environment

The role is based in a wood and steel processing manufacturing operation with exposure to moving mechanical parts and a high level of noise. You will frequently work near or around machinery and may occasionally face a risk of electrical shock. The position requires the ability to walk and stand for prolonged periods, occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally bend, squat, and stoop. Manual and finger dexterity are essential to operate tools, welding equipment, and material handling devices safely and accurately. The work environment includes airborne particles and regular exposure to outside weather conditions, including temperature variations, as materials and operations may extend into outdoor or semi-enclosed areas. Appropriate personal protective equipment is required and provided, supporting a safety-focused, industrial production setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Delaware, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $27.75/hr.
