Requirements

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY:

With minimum supervision performs both non pressure and pressure retaining welds on standard ASME vessels and piping on a routine basis.


ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Performs MIG, TIG, and flux-core welds on pressure-retaining components including boiler shells, steam drums, headers, tube-to-tubes sheet joints, and pressure vessel shells with minimal supervision

• Holds active Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ) under ASME Section IX covering required processes, positions, and base/filler metal groupings for Section I, IV, and VIII work

• Reads and interprets fabrication drawings, ASME weld symbols, WPS documents, and shop travelers specific to power boiler and heating boiler assemblies

• Performs fit-up and tacking of boiler pressure in compliance with ASME dimensional tolerances

• Monitors and verifies preheat and inter-pass temperatures using temperature-indicating crayons or contact thermometers prior to and during welding on code parts

• Identifies and corrects weld discontinuities including porosity, lack of fusion, undercut, cracks, etc. prior to NDE examination hold points

• Supports preparation for Authorized Inspector (AI) hold points including joint fit-up verification, WPS posting, and documentation readiness

• Maintains complete and accurate weld traceability records including base metal heat numbers, filler metal lot numbers, WPS references, and welder stamp identification

• Assists in hydrostatic pressure test preparation including final weld joint verification and temporary connection installation

• Mentors Welder I personnel on structural welding techniques, shop safety practices, and quality awareness


QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Certifications and Required Experience):

1) High School Diploma or GED

2) Technical Trade School (preferred)

3) 1+ years’ experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1) Heavy Work – Must be able to exert up to 75 pounds occasionally and 50 pounds frequently, using hoist and crane.

2) Frequent standing and walking.

3) Bending/Stooping – Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Full motion of the body, lower extremities and back muscles.

4) Respirator - Must be able to use a respirator (when needed) and may be exposed to dust and fumes.
