Welder/Fitter - El Cajon, CA - Career Opportunity
Job Description
- The Welder Fitter performs high-quality TIG and MIG welding on a variety of assemblies and materials, supporting fit-up and fabrication work under the guidance of a journeyman welder. This role involves reading and interpreting blueprints, using fixtures, operating hand grinders, and setting up welding equipment to complete precise welds on exotic alloys and stainless steels. The position is primarily on-site in El Cajon, CA for four days per week.
Responsibilities
- Perform TIG and MIG welding on a wide range of assemblies in accordance with drawings and specifications.
- Assist a journeyman welder with fit-up and fabrication tasks, ensuring accurate alignment and assembly of parts.
- Read and interpret blueprints and weld symbols to determine weld locations, sequence, and required techniques.
- Use fixtures and other tooling to position and secure components during welding and fabrication.
- Operate hand grinders and related tools to prepare, clean, and finish welds and materials.
- Weld exotic materials, including various alloys, Inconel, and 300/400 series stainless steel.
- Weld materials of different thicknesses, such as .032, .060, .090, and .188, while maintaining weld quality and consistency.
- Apply welding techniques using back gaps where required to achieve proper penetration and joint integrity.
- Set up welding machines, including adjusting amperage and other parameters, to match material and weld requirements.
- Document work performed, including type of rod used, type of weld, and other relevant process details.
- Identify materials and accurately record information on travelers and related documentation.
- Work on assigned jobs both within and adjacent to the core welding field, supporting fabrication and production needs as required.
- Fabricate parts under supervision, following instructions and quality standards throughout the process.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW) welding on assemblies.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and weld symbols.
- Hands-on experience with welding assembly and fixture usage.
- Skill in welding exotic materials, including alloys, Inconel, and 300/400 series stainless steel.
- Capability to weld materials in multiple thicknesses, including .032, .060, .090, and .188.
- Experience setting up weld machines, including amperage adjustments and process parameters.
- Competence in using hand grinders and related tools for material preparation and finishing.
- Ability to document welding work accurately, including consumables used and weld types.
- Skill in identifying materials and recording information on travelers and other production documents.
- Willingness to work on assigned jobs both inside and outside the core welding field as needed.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Ownership of a welding hood suitable for TIG and MIG welding operations.
- Ability to fabricate parts under supervision while following detailed instructions and drawings.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing clean, consistent, and high-quality welds.
- Comfort working with back-gap welding techniques where required.

Work Environment

The work involves standing for extended periods, working near welding arcs, sparks, and noise, and following appropriate safety procedures and protective equipment requirements typical of a welding and fabrication setting.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of El Cajon, CA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
