Job Description

The Welder will join a fabrication team responsible for laying out, cutting, fitting, measuring, and welding steel beams for concrete structures. This role focuses primarily on MIG welding with some Stick (SMAW) welding and involves both indoor and outdoor work. The position requires attention to detail, strong technical skills, and the ability to perform physically demanding tasks including frequent movement, bending, and lifting.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate steel components by laying out, cutting, fitting, measuring, and welding metals to create the required shapes and structures.
  • Perform primarily MIG welding and occasional Stick (SMAW) welding on steel beams for concrete structures.
  • Work as part of a team with other crew members to complete fabrication projects efficiently and safely.
  • Maintain an organized, clean, and efficient work area, including helping keep all areas of the department clean and orderly.
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance on welding equipment and tools as required.
  • Ensure each weld meets industry standards and is of the highest quality, visually inspecting welds for defects.
  • Identify welds that are not sufficient and determine when rework is necessary to meet quality expectations.
  • Use appropriate safety gear and equipment at all times while performing welding and fabrication tasks.
  • Change out welding wire and shielding gas as needed to maintain continuous and effective welding operations.
  • Work closely with the shop foreman to determine the sequence and order in which materials need to be welded.
  • Follow directions closely while working with minimal supervision, managing time effectively to meet production goals.
  • Use basic hand tools such as hammers, wrenches, and tape measures safely and correctly during fabrication tasks.
  • Read and interpret shop drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols to complete projects to specification.
  • Operate a forklift as needed to move materials and components within the shop.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, understanding that responsibilities may change at any time with or without notice.

Essential Skills

  • Valid AWS welding certification D1.1 or D1.4.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a fabrication environment.
  • 1+ year of MIG welding experience.
  • Approximately 1 year of SMAW (Stick) welding experience.
  • Ability to follow directions closely and work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet production deadlines.
  • Proficient use of basic hand tools such as hammers, wrenches, and tape measures.
  • Basic understanding of the working and moving parts of different types of welders.
  • Ability to read and interpret shop drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols.
  • Basic math skills and mechanical aptitude relevant to fabrication and welding.
  • Ability to operate a forklift safely.
  • Ability to stand and walk constantly throughout the day and lift up to 60 lbs on a regular basis.
  • High school diploma.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • AWS welding certification, preferably D1.1 or D1.4, beyond the minimum requirement is an advantage.
  • Previous experience as a welder/fabricator in a manufacturing or structural steel environment.
  • Strong communication skills to coordinate with team members and supervisors.
  • Ownership of personal welding hood and gloves.
  • Comfort working in both covered shop areas and outdoor environments as needed.

Work Environment

This is a full-time 1st shift position, Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with overtime available during the week and some weekend work as needed. The role is physically active and requires constant standing and walking, minimal sitting (up to 2 hours per day), and the ability to lift up to 60 lbs on a regular basis. Most work takes place in a covered welding shop within a manufacturing plant, where noise levels can be very high and the environment is not air conditioned. Some tasks may be performed outdoors and are exposed to various weather conditions. Appropriate safety gear is required at all times, and team members are expected to bring and use their own welding hood and gloves.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cedar Park, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $32.00/hr.
