WDVA is excited to announce we are hiring an experiencedMaintenance Mechanic 3at our award-winning Walla Walla Veterans Home!

In this lead role, you will perform preventative maintenance, repairs, construction, and skilled work in multiple trades fields. You will also lead various facilities projects and lead the work of others within the Facilities Department.

Please Note: The expected shift for this position is 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with occasional variation to accommodate call coverage after hours when the Plant Manager 2 is absent.

*This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step L. Step M has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules.
Homes 24/7 facility differential:Updated as of July 1, 2025: This position is eligible for "Supplement Basic Shift Premium" for 24/7 Facilities. Employees who are assigned to a facility that provides direct care to residents, patients, and/or clients and whose duties are required to be performed on location will receive an additional one dollar ($1.00) per hour of supplemental basic shift premium for each hour of basic shift premium. This shift premium does not apply to overtime hours. The supplemental basic shift premium shall expire on June 29, 2027.
In this position, your working knowledge of skills fields such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, painting, and machinist work will be critical in the maintenance of our long-term care facility and grounds.

In addition, we provide critical community services through a variety of programs, and at our four State Veterans Homes located in Orting, Port Orchard, Spokane, and Walla Walla. These locations provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to Veterans, including, in some instances, their spouses, widows, or Gold Star Families.
Some of what you'll do:
  • Actively lead, prioritize, and document required preventative maintenance and other repairs via routine inspections, scheduled maintenance, and WorxHub requests.
  • Develop creative solutions and lead Facilities team members in work related to life safety concerns and challenges or complications with facility/plant maintenance and repairs.
  • Assist Plant Manager with audits and preparation for annual VA and State surveys and follow-up.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repair of motor vehicles, gas, and diesel equipment.
  • Leads and performs the work of preventative maintenance and repairs on many types of mechanical equipment such as electrical drive motors, laundry, kitchen, hospital, laboratory, and air-conditioning equipment.
  • Monitor safety, fire protection, and environmental control equipment.
  • Perform inspections as required on personal safety equipment and reject all items that do not meet safety standards.
  • Repair buildings inside and out such as repairing walls, rafters, roofts; hangs, tapes, finishes, and paints interior sheetrock walls; install countertops; hang doors; paint curbs and parking lots stripes.
  • Work with a variety of employees and contracted tradesmen to facilitate maintenance, repair, and other projects.
  • Tear down/reassemble HVAC equipment as needed for thorough cleaning.

  • High school graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work, and/or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic trade.
  • Valid state driver's license.
  • Must be proficient in the English language.

Preferred/Desired:
  • One (1) or more years of work experience in equipment and building maintenance and repairs specifically in a healthcare setting.
  • Ability to:
    • Read commercial blueprints and apply building codes through the full range of commercial and industrial maintenance and construction work.
    • Demonstrate experience in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, welding, machining, controls, carpentry, and plumbing skill sets.
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic trade and one (1) year of experience as a journey-level worker in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work.
Special Requirements:
  • Must be able to pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check prior to beginning services and every two (2) years in accordance with WDVA Policy 615.000 Background Checks. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Must be able to perform moderately heavy physical effort for some tasks such as moving furniture, equipment, etc. Incumbent must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. and may push/pull/carry objects weighing over 60 lbs.
  • Must be able to perform physically demanding work with continuous standing and walking; frequent lifting, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, and bending; repetitive motion of hands and arms and gripping with hands.
  • Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.000 Tuberculosis Testing.
  • Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by the Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards. Must be able to wear a respirator, medical gloves, gowns, eye protection, and other personal protection as required by a job or task.
  • Must maintain regular and reliable attendance, successfully complete employee orientation and other required training.
  • Must become familiar and comply with all DVA policies and procedures and Collective Bargaining Agreements as applicable.
  • Candidates who are offered a job with WDVA must possess work authorization which does not require sponsorship by the employer for a visa now or in the future.
