The purpose of this position is to operate the processes/equipment at the Water Treatment Plant to meet compliance requirements and produce high quality drinking water. Observes, interprets, documents and maintains online data for process control and permit compliance.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.- Assists in the operation of control board, monitors tank levels distribution pressure and flows.
- Performs water tests and analysis to ensure production and quality standards are met. Adjusts treatment process as needed.
- Works with hazardous chemicals, chlorine gas, ammonia, fluoride, caustic soda and sulfuric acid.
- Communicates with supervisors, and other shift members to ensure proper communication during and between shift exchanges.
- Empties grit pits as assigned.
- Visually inspects equipment and reports maintenance or repair problems at the beginning and at the end of the workday.
- Assists in testing and calibrations of equipment. Performs preventative maintenance on water treatment machinery and equipment.
- Assists with the maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment.
- Assists in monitoring security and water quality at the City’s water storage tanks.
- Maintains appearance of laboratory, control board and chemical containment areas.
- Adheres to Plant procedures and policies.
- Assists in maintaining official operations logbook.
- Assists in completing required paperwork including calculating plant readings.
- Perform manual and/or laboring tasks; uses hand tools and power tools either separate or in conjunction with equipment being operated or tasks being performed.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:- High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- Must pass the Florida Class “C” Drinking Water exam and must obtain Florida Class “C” Drinking Water license within 18 months.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:- Knowledge of basic mathematics.
- Knowledge of basic chemistry.
- Knowledge of computer software.
- Ability to prepare written reports, to maintain required record and to make mathematical computations.
- Ability to work during emergency conditions such as Hurricanes and other disasters.
- Ability to work all shifts and fill in for other staff.
- Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
- Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.- Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.- Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
- Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
- Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
- Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
- Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
- Traffic; Moving machinery.
- Electrical shock; Heights.
- Radiation; Disease/pathogens.
WORK HOURS- Role requires shift work, shifts are typically 7am-3:00pm; 3:00pm - 11:00pm and 11:00pm - 7:00am(May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays to meet the business needs of the City.)
