This is skilled mechanical work in repairing, testing, and installing water meters. Work includes a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the shop and field in cleaning, repairing, maintaining, and testing water meters. Work is reviewed through efficient meter operations, general inspections, and consultation with a supervisor.
This position is for a Water Meter Repairer II however, it may be filled at the level of Water Meter Repairer I.- Installs, removes, and relocates residential and commercial water meters; replaces broken boxes and damaged meters; repairs water meter registers; repairs meter leaks.
- Tests water meters; repairs service lines; cuts off water for delinquent accounts and plumbing repairs.
- Checks on low water pressure, high bill complaints, and water leaks under solid flooring with an electronic leak locator.
- Disassembles water meters; cleans parts; inspects, refits, and replaces discs, spindles, and parts in gear trains; rebuilds registers and reassembles meters.
- Performs maintenance mechanic duties, including machine work, welding, fabrication, and repairs to pumps, tapping machines, and various water system tools and equipment.
- May be required to participate and/or facilitate training to support departmental or City initiatives and requirements.
- May be required to work overtime, or alternate hours, as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
- Position is designated as Mission Critical by Department Director.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS- Performs related work as required.

- Two years of experience in repairing and maintaining water meters.
- Must possess and maintain a Class “C” Water Distribution License.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class “A” Commercial driver’s license. The employing department will determine the required appropriate endorsements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS for Water Meter Repairer I- Must possess and maintain a valid telephone number.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to obtain Class “A” CDL within six months of employment.
- Must be able to obtain a Class “C” Water Distribution License within 18 months of employment.
- Required to pass and maintain qualification for:
- Respiratory Protection Physical.
- Pulmonary Function.
- Qualitative and Quantitative Fit Test(s).

- Skill in the use and care of work-related tools and equipment.
- Ability to diagnose defects in water metering equipment and to determine proper corrective measures.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the general public.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS- Requires active work that involves walking or standing most of the time, exerting up to 120 pounds of force regularly in such ways as loading/unloading and lifting heavy equipment.
- The job risks exposure to bright/dim light, dust, pollen, extreme heat/cold, wet or humid conditions, fumes or noxious odors, electrical shock, toxic/caustic chemicals, asbestos-containing material, and traffic.
- The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
