Note: This is a Hybrid role in McLean,VA and requires the employee to be onsite a few days a week, based on the business need.

The VP – Associate General Counsel of AI and Technology will provide business counsel support to Maximus’s technology organization, which develops and implements technological solutions for the company. This attorney will drive legal strategies to support AI and technology transactions. This critical role encompasses advising on multi-jurisdictional compliance, mitigating legal risks, establishing governance frameworks, and managing technology-related contracts. The ideal candidate brings substantive expertise in AI and technology law, coupled with exceptional problem-solving, communication, and collaboration abilities. This position plays a vital role in navigating and influencing the dynamic legal landscape of AI and technology.


Key Responsibilities:

- Serve as primary business counsel for the Office of the Chief Digital & Information Officer, Maximus’s function responsible for technology, data and digital strategy.

- Mature and manage the company’s AI governance program, ensuring alignment with other functional areas.

- Manage and lead the Tech Law function as a strategic leader who also personally provides legal support for technology-related matters, including transactional matters, such as software licenses, cloud computing arrangements, collaboration and joint development agreements, and AI related agreements.

- Monitor developments and advise stakeholders on compliance requirements related to the Company’s technology-enabled customer service offerings, including but not limited to the AI legal environment in the United States (Federal and State) and internationally.

- Provide legal support for new product development and data governance activities in conjunction with other functional areas. Actively participate in software and AI governance reviews to ensure compliance with legal, organizational, and contractual requirements.

- Support third party risk management related to technology and AI matters.

- Counsel business leadership on strategic technology initiatives. Identify and mitigate legal risks associated with AI and technology operations, and develop, implement, and oversee policies and procedures to manage these risks effectively.

- Support contract negotiations by reviewing and/or handling escalations for technology-related clauses and risk issues.

Minimum Requirements

- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and admission to any U.S. state bar.

- 13+ years of relevant legal experience.

- Extensive experience in AI and technology law, preferably including involvement with technology agreements.

- Ability to manage, handle and prioritize multiple projects, and a proven track record of managing complex legal issues.

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

- Excellent communication and negotiation abilities, including ability to effectively advocate/problem-solve as necessary to obtain desired outcomes and meet regulatory requirements.

- Strong collaborator with other functional areas within the Office of General Counsel and the entire enterprise.

- Ability to stay updated with the latest developments in AI and technology law.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience building and/or managing a software governance process and/or an AI governance process.

- Experience working with technology related to government contracting, including familiarity with CMMC, FedRAMP and NIST requirements.

- Experience with privacy, IP contracting and/or litigation, and data licensing matters

- Experience working in both a law firm and in-house setting.
