WSP is currently initiating a search for a Vice President, Tunnel Engineer for our Geotechnical and Tunneling Team based in San Francisco, CA. Be involved in projects with our Geotechnical and Tunneling National Business Line and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.
In this role you will build our business through client engagement and partnerships, develop our team through mentoring and project leadership, and manage and support projects in the transportation, water, power and commercial markets with technical excellence.
Your Impact
- Lead and perform tunnel and geotechnical engineering analysis and design for infrastructure projects primarily in the West and around the country, including work for tunnels, highways, slopes and embankments.
- Plan and manage subsurface investigations for tunnel, roadway, bridge and building projects and subsequently prepare various types of geotechnical reports including data, interpretative and baseline reports.
- Apply advanced geotechnical and tunneling engineering techniques and processes to identify improvements for various infrastructure project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction and operation.
- Prepare construction drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for underground and foundation aspects of infrastructure projects.
- Develop and retain a client base for providing tunnel and underground services, including identifying business development opportunities, and cross-selling of other WSP capabilities. Responsible for the planning, pursuit, and development of business, and the successful execution of tunnel engineering work within the West Coast. Develop and inform proposal and project scopes, timelines, pricing, and budgetary metrics.
- Collaborate across business lines to help develop and support opportunities and projects with tunnel and underground components. Oversee and monitor cross-functional teams of engineers, planners and designers to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects.
- Mentor staff to support their growth and professional development. Manage and provide performance guidance and leadership to assigned staff.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- B.S. in Civil Engineering
- 12+ years of relevant post education experience in tunnelling, underground or geotechnical engineering.
- Professional engineering license in California
- Advanced proficiency with tunnelling and geotechnical engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, standard of care, and the application to project work-related issues.
- Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific design software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Strong working knowledge of relevant engineering and construction codes, laws, regulations, permitting, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements, and the business impact upon the organization.
- Works independently and provides guidance and leadership to mid-level to senior level team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with employees at all levels of the organization.
- Experienced with providing critical review of documents and preparing technical deliverables and plans with a high degree of complexity. Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, and statistical analysis, and arriving at effective, economical, and logical solutions.
- Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree or Doctorate in Structural/Geotechnical Engineering.
- Experience with Design/Build, Progressive Design/Build and other procurement methods.
- Program/Construction management experience of underground project
- Ability and willingness for travel, field work and work at project office
- Excellent verbal and written communications

Compensation:
Expected Salary (all locations): $165,000 - $285,000
WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
