The firm is headquartered in Portland, Oregon, but we anticipate this individual could also reside in one of the major U.S. financial centers (e.g., New York, Chicago, San Francisco).

Vice President, Credit Surveillance

Variant is seeking a resourceful and highly motivated candidate to fill the newly created role of Vice President of Investments, Credit Surveillance. Variant’s core investment strategy focuses on providing capital to specialty finance lenders in asset-based lending structures. In this role, the individual will lead the ongoing monitoring and oversight of the portfolio of loans originated by Variant, ensuring strong performance, compliance, and risk management.

Responsibilities

This candidate will be charged with overseeing the surveillance process, leading improvements, and managing dedicated staff to carry out the following monitoring duties:

  • Work with the internal Forensic Auditor and external examiners to conduct periodic field testing of the receivables in Variant-originated credit facilities
  • Ensure consistent data connections for bank collection accounts and originator loan tape stats
  • Manage a fraud detection program to verify the robustness of the data
  • Enhance processes to detect the double pledging of collateral
  • Oversee processes for testing the integrity of borrowing base calculations
  • Assist the investment team in assessing weaknesses in loan tapes
  • Lead efforts in tracking loan covenants and identification of non-compliant borrowers
  • Assist the technology team in developing and utilizing AI tools and software to enhance and streamline the surveillance processes
  • Participate in investment committee meetings
  • Liaise with operations, research, senior management, and external fund service providers
  • Prepare summaries and ongoing reports/updates to relevant stakeholders (investment team, management committee, fund leverage providers, fund board, marketing department, etc.)

Job Requirements

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience in accounting/finance
  • Candidate must be extremely detail oriented
  • Ability to develop and implement new processes
  • Preference for candidate with experience in specialty finance and asset-backed finance
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Comfortable operating in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
