The Technical Department
The Technical Department is a vital department responsible for ensuring the smooth operation and maintenance of our diverse fleet of vessels. Our talented team plays a crucial role in upholding the highest standards of safety, reliability, and efficiency in maritime operations. What You will Do
This role has general management responsibility for the assigned vessels and therefore requires a highly experienced and technically proficient individual to handle the role. The individual is also required to manage the maintenance, safety, and operational efficiency of assigned cruise vessels. The Vessel Manager is the key point of contact for the vessels management team, ensuring general oversight and the seamless operation of all technical and hotel system.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Technical Operations and Maintenance
- System Oversight: Manage the technical operations and maintenance of the assigned cruise vessel, covering propulsion, power generation, HVAC, wastewater treatment, and vital hotel systems (galley, laundries, elevators, etc.).
- Planned Maintenance: Supervise the vessel's Planned Maintenance System (PMS), ensuring compliance and effectiveness in preventing breakdowns and optimizing machinery performance. Review vessel month end machinery performance reports, service reports and makers recommendations, in consultation with the vessel, to ensure machinery is maintained in optimum condition.
- Troubleshooting: Provide expert, timely technical guidance and remote support to shipboard engineering staff to resolve complex operational issues and minimize guest impact.
- Inspections – carry out detailed vessel inspections at regular intervals to assess the actual condition of the vessel and identify areas for follow up.
- Logistics: Oversee the Technical Officer /Purchasing team in the procurement and delivery of spare parts, technical services, and stores, focusing on cost control and timely delivery to meet cruise schedules
Dry-Docking and Refurbishment Projects
- Project Management: Plan, prepare, and execute dry-docking, wet docking, and major refurbishment projects, including specifications, budget control, and shipyard negotiation.
- Upgrades: Oversee the installation and commissioning of new equipment and system upgrades, particularly those related to environmental compliance (e.g., scrubbers, ballast water treatment systems).
- Budget: Control the capital expenditure (CAPEX) budget for new installations and major repairs, ensuring high-quality completion within time and cost limits.
- Approve purchase orders and invoices within delegated authority ($30,000).
Regulatory Compliance and Safety
- Compliance: Ensure absolute adherence to all international and flag state regulations, including SOLAS, MARPOL, and Classification Society rules, to maintain valid statutory certificates.
- Audits and Inspections: Coordinate and where required, attend external inspections and Class attendances, ensuring the vessel is technically prepared for continuous operation.
- SMS: Implement and enforce the company's Safety Management System (SMS) and environmental policies onboard the assigned vessels, in coordination with the QHSE and Ops teams.
Financial and Crew Management
- OPEX Control: Prepare, monitor, and manage the vessel's Operating Expenditure (OPEX) budget for the technical department, identifying areas for cost savings and efficiency improvement.
- Performance Reporting: Generate detailed technical and financial performance reports for senior management and clients.
- Crewing – work with the Crewing team on vessel recruitment and rotation. Prepare appraisals for the senior officers on board.
Client Management
- Keep clients closes updated on vessel condition particularly on matters of regulatory and /or commercial impact. Respond to any queries in consultation with the other departments.
What We Are Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in marine engineering, Naval Architecture, or a related technical field.
- Professional Certification: A Chief Engineer’s license (Class 1 or equivalent) is highly desirable. This can be relaxed especially y with experience on large passenger vessels.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of shore-based experience as a Technical Superintendent.
- Technical Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of high-voltage systems, complex hotel loads, wastewater treatment, and cruise ship-specific safety and damage control systems.
- Compliance: In-depth understanding of Classification Society requirements and IMO conventions.
- Travel: Must be willing and able to travel frequently and internationally on short notice.
- Software Proficiency: Experience with computerized Planned Maintenance Systems (PMS) as well as MS Office.
