Performs preventative maintenance on state equipment, following the prescribed fluid levels, lubrication, fueling, and tire servicing in accordance to policies, rules, and regulations. Diagnoses, repairs, or replaces parts, as necessary, to maintain all automotive gasoline engines, transmissions, brakes, exhaust systems, cylinder heads, valves, hydraulic systems, timing belts, controls, cooling systems, and other components. Performs wiring repairs, brake jobs, and tune-ups when required on vehicles and equipment. Diagnoses the repairs or replacement of parts on all diesel-powered equipment assigned to SCDOT. Performs maintenance and repairs on diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulic motors, pumps, cylinders, mowing equipment, tractors, motograders, rollers, and AMZ machines. Acts as shop supervisor in the absence of the Shop Foreman. Maintains data in the Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS), to include time-entering and service tickets. Ensures proper time is charged to appropriate tasks performed on equipment. Reports major preventative servicing problems to the Shop Foreman. Assists in auto/truck body repairs when necessary. Inspects vehicles/equipment for safety, checking brake and exhaust system, etc. Assists in making more complex repairs on state equipment SCDOT Series 001 through 240. Reads and interprets the technical parts manual and service bulletins. Diagnoses, repairs, or replaces parts, as necessary, on all automotive gasoline engines, transmissions, brakes, exhaust systems, cylinder heads, valves, timing belts, and cooling systems. Operates and performs testing with new generation start tester and monitor testing equipment in order to diagnose problems with various on-board computer systems. Performs welding and fabrication, as needed, for repairs on various equipment making modifications to equipment to improve the production of utilizations. Performs electric welding and/or gas welding. Assists supervisor in developing and establishing agency training to fulfill needs of the shop and agency. Repairs vehicles and equipment during service calls that require repair before movement. Assists in shop operations during after-hours emergencies and inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts, possibly during weekends and/or holidays. Operates both anti-icing and snow removal equipment during snow and ice response on highways and bridges. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Two (2) years of work experience that involved the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly-related experience. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulate objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. grasping. This position requires working in a large garage setting and may perform duties in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
