Vegetation and Litter Crew Supervisor (seasonal job)

This position oversees Community Service laborers in performing a variety of semi-skilled roadside vegetation maintenance duties. The position is within the Public Works Department and works under the supervisory direction of the Street Maintenance Supervisor. The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
  • Communicate to, instruct, and coordinate a crew of Community Service laborers in trimming and removing vegetation on the roadside and within drainage ponds and corridors, and in removing litter and road debris.
  • Work alongside crew members doing above tasks using all kinds of handheld landscape maintenance tools. Work includes operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting equipment such as power weed trimmers, leaf blowers, and hedge trimmers.
  • Prepare paperwork associated with crew, including work reports and attendance records.
  • Follow written and oral direction from Street/Storm Supervisor or Foreman.
  • Read maps of city and drainage facilities.
  • Deal with public that comes in contact with crew.
  • When no Community Service workers show up for work, the Crew coordinator would work with the City Street and Storm crews as a Maintenance Worker I.
Requires one (1) year experience in heavy manual labor as a lead worker or an equivalent combination of related education and experience; must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier.The statements contained herein reflect general details as necessary to describe the principal functions of this job, the level of knowledge and skill typically required, and the scope of responsibility, but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements. Job Location and Equipment Utilized

Work is performed in an outdoor environment, with exposure to seasonal heat, cold, and extreme weather conditions. Exposure to traffic noises, traffic fumes and other traffic hazards occur. Equipment utilized includes hand and power tools and operates light vehicles.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the use and operation of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to give and follow both verbal and written instructions.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Bargaining Unit: This position is a seasonal/part-time, non-represented position for the first 346 hours of work. Once 346 hours have been worked, the position will continue to be a seasonal, part-time, non-benefitted position, however, will become represented by our Teamsters union group.
