Visitor Center Coordinator – Part-time

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) is a mission-driven non-profit dedicated to ensuring the future of elk, other wildlife, their habitat and our hunting heritage. Since our founding in 1984, we have helped conserve nearly one square mile of elk country every day. In partnership with others, we have conserved or enhanced more than 9.1 million acres, including improving public access to 1.6 million acres. Our impact will extend to 10 million acres by 2030.


RMEF is seeking part-time Visitor Center Coordinators to support the daily operations of the Elk Country Visitor Center. This role plays a key part in creating meaningful visitor experiences while sharing the story of conservation and RMEF’s mission. Responsibilities include:

  • Engaging visitors and providing education on RMEF’s mission and conservation impact
  • Supporting retail operations including processing sales, managing inventory and maintaining a professional retail environment
  • Assisting with special events including preparation and day-of coordination

This is a part-time position where hours may vary from week to week. Weekend work is required.


Qualifications include:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Combination of post-secondary education and/or work experience for a minimum of three years, with a preference for retail experience
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Knowledge of and ability to use Microsoft Office programs, and ability to learn and use relational database systems
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and demonstrate a high level of professionalism

Physical Requirements:

  • Position is based at RMEF’s Headquarters office in Missoula, Montana
  • Part-time schedule with hours that may vary from week to week
  • Weekend work required, occasional evening work may be required
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds, including some heavy lifting

Job Summary:

The Visitor Center Coordinator supports the daily operations of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) Elk Country Visitor Center (VC) by providing exceptional customer service, engaging visitors in RMEF’s mission, and assisting with retail operations. This role focuses on creating a welcoming atmosphere, promoting RMEF’s conservation efforts, and ensuring an attractive and organized retail environment.


This is a part-time position where hours may vary from week to week. Weekend work is required.


Essential Functions:

  1. Welcome visitors, answer inquiries, process retail sales, and educate guests about RMEF’s mission and conservation efforts.
  2. Stay informed and educated about RMEF issues.
  3. Answer phones, respond to inquiries, and forward calls or messages as needed.
  4. Be proficient with membership database, address change and member search procedures.
  5. Solicit new and renewing members while promoting RMEF’s mission.
  6. Assist in maintaining an inviting and professional retail environment by restocking, folding, and arranging merchandise, as well as performing light cleaning tasks as needed. Assist with the receiving, tagging, folding and display of merchandise.
  7. Assist Visitor Center staff on optimizing product placement to enhance sales and visitor engagement.
  8. Learn and operate the RMEF point-of-sale system to facilitate transactions accurately and efficiently.
  9. Assist with Kid’s Events, including preparation for and working the day of the event. Assist with the planning and coordination of special events in the VC and local area.
  10. Execute daily, monthly, and annual inventory counts.

  2. Must demonstrate excellent customer service skills and be attentive and responsive to customers.
  3. Exhibit a high level of professionalism in all forms of communication and behavior.
  4. Ability to discuss and explain RMEF’s mission, mission priorities and fundraising programs.
  5. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Must have the ability to communicate with varied audiences.
  6. Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and ability to effectively use these programs. Ability to understand and use CRM and relational database systems.
  7. Be willing to work in a team atmosphere and be able to effectively work independently.
  8. Must maintain a positive and professional approach to work.
  9. Must be efficient in multi-tasking and prioritizing.
  10. Organizational skills and attention to detail are essential. Ability to follow through on projects to completion with accuracy.


Physical Demands:

The employee must sit or stand for long periods of time; use a computer terminal; reach forward and to the side; bend from both standing and sitting position; and lift items weighing various amounts up to 40 pounds, including some heavy lifting. Weekend work is required. Some late evenings may be required.
