Utility Worker - $22+/hr

Job Description

The Utility Worker supports safe and efficient steel manufacturing operations by assisting machine operators, managing material flow, operating industrial equipment, and maintaining a clean, organized production area. This role works in a heavy industrial forging environment and plays a key part in ensuring product quality, minimizing downtime, and keeping production lines running smoothly.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate equipment and line set-up activities as requested by operators to ensure timely production starts.
  • Assist operators by pulling heaters after stoppages and helping to quickly resume production.
  • Return pieces to the production line at line loaders to maintain consistent material flow.
  • Assist crane operators by safely hooking up loads and helping clear pit jams.
  • Guide completed first ends from the take-away conveyor to the appropriate rack.
  • Remove exit ends from the conveyor when racks are full to prevent line backups.
  • Maintain all wood in the steel buildings, ensuring it is organized, stacked safely, and free from hazards.
  • Operate the pallet conveyor to bring full skids into position when one has been emptied, without stopping the press or allowing it to run with empty passes.
  • Operate cycle push buttons as required to support machine operation and material movement.
  • Monitor for heat changes in material and ensure heats are not mixed, informing the operator or appropriate personnel when a heat change is about to occur.
  • Verify that pallets of material have a Green accept tag before loading into the coater and notify the operator or appropriate personnel if no Green accept tag is found.
  • Watch for material conditions that are not suitable for running through the coater, such as rust, oil, or other contamination, and promptly inform the operator.
  • Run sonic reject pieces during periods of downtime and at the end of jobs as required.
  • Perform general labor tasks including loading, unloading, assembly support, inspection assistance, and basic repair or adjustment tasks as directed.
  • Use hand tools, gauges, micrometers, calipers, and other measuring devices to support inspection and quality control activities when needed.
  • Support machine operation, production line activities, and material handling tasks, including operating sit-down forklifts and assisting with overhead crane operations within training and authorization limits.
  • Read or follow basic blueprints or work instructions as required for production and inspection tasks.

Why Work Here?

Join a long-established, unionized industrial operation that has been supporting the automotive industry for over a century and offers strong opportunities for growth and advancement. Employees benefit from a structured environment with clear progression, a 401(k) plan with company match after the probationary period, and healthcare and benefits starting on day one. The organization values stability, skill development, and long-term careers, providing a workplace where your contributions directly support critical components used on vehicles across the road.

Work Environment

This role is based in a heavy industrial forging environment that is not temperature controlled, so conditions can be hot, noisy, and physically demanding. The facility operates multiple shifts within a unionized structure, and employees must be open to working any shift. Typical shift hours are: 1st shift from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., 2nd shift from 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and 3rd shift from 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Overtime applies after 8 hours of work per day, and off-shift roles include additional hourly premiums. The work involves frequent material handling, operation of sit-down forklifts and other industrial equipment, and close proximity to machinery such as presses, coaters, conveyors, and overhead cranes. Employees work in steel buildings and production areas where maintaining cleanliness, organization, and safety is essential, and attire should be appropriate for a heavy industrial, forging, and manufacturing environment.
