The City of Lake Oswego is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Streets Superintendent within the Public Works Operations Division.
The Streets Superintendent works under the general direction of the Deputy Public Works Director and is responsible for planning and coordinating the operations and maintenance activities of the City’s Streets Department. As Superintendent, the incumbent would hire, train, supervise, and evaluate the work of the Streets Utility Crews, and assist work crews as needed.
The Streets Superintendent position provides an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual with knowledge of street system standards, exceptional leadership and customer service abilities and the ability to prioritize multiple aspects of work.
The Position: The Streets Superintendent oversees the City’s streets system operations, which includes street signs, striping, signal maintenance, street lighting, street sweeping, snowplowing and sanding, tree removal, and pavement restoration and patching along with managing contractors, and managing the Streets budget. Additional responsibilities include: remaining current with changes in laws and regulations, managing contracts with outside vendors, performing field inspections and, maintaining equipment used in delivery of service.
Qualified candidates must have knowledge and understanding of computer systems; the ability to create SOP’s that align with APWA best management practices; knowledge and understanding of pavement standards; ability to learn and use programs associated pavement condition assessment; also understand the regulations on Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD); be able to read and understand blueprints and as-builts. In addition, qualified candidates must have effective oral and written communication skills; the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public and employees; the ability to perform manual tasks for long periods of time in inclement weather and overtime situations. Be skilled in the operation of heavy construction equipment.
The Department: Operations is a division of the City’s Public Works Department and includes Streets, Stormwater, Wastewater (collection only), Water (distribution), Motor Pool (Fleet) and Facilities. From emergency preparedness to routine scheduled maintenance activities, the Operation Divisions’ objective is to set the standard for efficient and effective customer service.
Preferred candidates will have an Associate Degree in Business Management, Engineering or related field; at least four years of experience in Street maintenance, and at least one year’s supervisory experience.
Positions in this classification require the ability to possess and maintain a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) within six months of appointment and ability to meet the City’s driving standards. Additional certifications relevant to the position may also be required.
This position works primarily during routine daytime hours. However, responses to emergencies or construction schedules will require some nighttime, weekend, and holiday work activity. Duties will occasionally involve working in adverse or inclement weather conditions; exposure to high noise levels; dealing with distraught or difficult individuals; occasional response to emergency conditions during off-hours; operation of a motor vehicle on public roads. Frequent travel between facilities involves the hazards normally associated with vehicular travel, particularly during inclement weather.
Hiring is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment background check, pre-employment drug test and physical capacity exam (PCE).

Bilingual Pay:Employees who can speak and/or write a language listed in the top five (5) most common languages spoken in the Lake Oswego School District, may be eligible for three percent (3%) bilingual pay.
