Job Duties:

The Department of Public Utilities provides quality water and sanitary sewer services to Virginia Beach residents. Become a part of our dedicated workforce who provide these essential services.

We are currently hiring for a Utility Mechanic I position within our Meter Operations team.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PUBLIC UTILITIES, OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE: Must be available to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, standby and overtime when required to meet operational needs. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City's operational status. This position may require incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.

Duties & expectations for this position include…

  • Perform manual labor, such as hand excavation and heavy lifting in connection with the maintenance and repair of residential and commercial water meters
  • Knowledge and proper use of basic hand tools, common maintenance and manual labor tasks and the use of associated tools
  • Follows oral and written instructions and safety precautions/practices for construction work
  • Use iPad to complete work assignments in an automated work order system
  • Operate motor vehicles and small construction equipment
  • Maintain personal protective equipment
  • Lifting, without assistance, heavy articles that weigh approximately 50 pounds
  • May occasionally be required to work in confined spaces
  • Assist in performing routine scheduled and emergency repairs and maintenance functions to water meters
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with senior employees and supervisors about any issues that arise
  • Respond to verbal customer inquiries as necessary
  • Team player. Supports other co-workers within the Meter Operations Bureau and Public Utilities Operations Division
  • Performs other job duties as determined by the supervisor based on workload and department needs
  • The Utility Mechanic position is part of a job series which provides successful candidates promotional growth opportunities through an established Career Progression Program
  • This is an entry level position with a starting rate of $18.55/hour

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Any combination of experience and education equivalent to High School or GED plus one (1) year of experience in positions such as Laborer or in a similar field such as utility maintenance. Must have a current and valid drivers license. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be available to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position may require that incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Preferences:
