Job Duties:
The Department of Public Utilities provides quality water and sanitary sewer services to Virginia Beach residents. Be a part of our dedicated and exemplary workforce who provide these essential services. We are currently hiring for the position of Utility Mechanic I with our Sewer Collection team.
Special Requirements for Public Utilities, Operations & Maintenance: Must be available to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, standby and overtime when required to meet operational needs as we are a 24/7/365 department. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee's supervisor based on position assigned.

NOTE: Selected candidates not already possessing a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) MUST be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License Instruction Permit within six (6) months of employment and then obtain a full Class A CDL license with air brake and tanker endorsements within nine (9) months of employment. This is a requirement of the position and is non-negotiable for continued employment and career progression. Failure to obtain a Class A CDL with endorsements may result in termination.
If you possess a Class B CDL, and you are offered the position of Utility Mechanic I we will assist you in completing the upgrade courses and skills test within 90 days of hire (course & test offered in-house at no expense to employees). Failure to obtain a Class A CDL with endorsements may result in termination.

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS: Any combination of experience and education equivalent to High School or GED plus one (1) year of experience in positions such as Laborer or in a similar field such as utility maintenance. Must have a current and valid drivers license. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be available to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position may require that incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Preferences:

• Experience maintaining/repairing sanitary sewer systems
• Experience with hand tools and/or construction equipment
• Experience working in utility construction
• Experience with computerized work order & mapping systems
• Experience working outside in extreme weather conditions
