The City of Norfolk's Department of Public Works is currently seeking a Utility Maintenance Mechanic I, an essential position that will assist with the inspection and maintenance of all mechanical and electrical mission critical equipment associated with storm water operations. This position functions as part of a team that inspects and maintains pump stations, portable pumps, electrical systems, and aerators throughout the City. This highly sophisticated equipment is essential to protect Norfolk’s infrastructure and assets.
The Division of Environmental Storm Water Management is tasked with reducing the threat of flooding and improving the water quality within the City of Norfolk. Our crews maintain the City’s stormwater infrastructure, consisting of underground pipes, structures, roadside and offroad ditches, BMPs, and pump stations to minimize the impact of rain and tidal flooding
The Department of Public Works builds, maintains, and operates the physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of Norfolk’s citizens, businesses and visitors, including the City’s Storm Water System, Street Network and Waste Management and Recycling Systems. The Department is comprised of 8 divisions that function collectively to make your commute safe and efficient, your neighborhood more attractive, and the streets and sidewalks clean and well-maintained.
Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $44,994.56Essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Performs maintenance to storm water pumping stations and surrounding grounds.
- Performs repairs and preventative maintenance to mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Performs preventative and emergency inspections and maintenance for electrical equipment and tools including motors, gates, valves, gauges, generators, and other mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Assists with inspecting, cleaning, rebuilding, replacing, or repairing belts, filters, hoses, fluids, blades, and hydraulic, electrical, and safety systems.
- Performs safety inspections, troubleshoots, diagnoses, overhauls, rebuilds, and lubricates engines and other equipment.
- Maintains electronic and written records and reports by accurately documenting maintenance work performed and installation logs.
- Resolves issues by investigating complaints, inspecting necessary materials and equipment, scheduling and prioritizing work, and documenting progress and productivity.
- Responds to emergencies by leading damage recovery teams.
- Computer experience and knowledge required. Knowledge of work management database systems and Microsoft suite a plus. Knowledge with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system a plus.
- Must be able to read and interpret work orders, safety data sheets, manuals, pipe plans and schematics, and general correspondence.
- Requires ability to clearly understand verbal or written instructions.
- Requires the ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
- Requires physical ability to stoop, bend, lift-up to 50 pounds.
- Employee must not have phobias of water, heights, or confined spaces.
- Requires normal hearing, peripheral and night vision, and depth perception to safely work around electrical and mechanical equipment.
- Requires ability to work in adverse weather conditions, including extreme hot and cold temperatures, sometimes under emergency conditions
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, and technical processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
One year in machinery repair or maintenance, or successful completion of a City apprenticeship program.
The preferred candidate will have some experience with mechanical or electrical equipment repair.
The preferred candidate will have the ability to:
- Climb, stoop, and bend.
- Use considerable knowledge of traffic laws and regulations as they apply to heavy motorized equipment.
- Understand oral and written instructions.
- Read city maps.
- Use adequate hearing, vision, and dept perception to safely work in the right-away and operate construction equipment in streets with high volume.
- Work in adverse weather conditions, including extreme hot and cold temperatures and wet / rainy environments during both emergency and non-emergency conditions.
