The Position:
Under the guidance of an Installer/Repairer-Lead, or an Installer/Repairer, assists in the installation, repair and maintenance of the water, gas, and wastewater system facilities.An Installer/Repairer Assistant typically goes through a three-year rotation to achieve journey-level proficiency in all three of these underground utility services with the goal of becoming eligible to become a Utility Installer/Repairer.
Ideal Candidate
- Class B California Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker Endorsement
- D1 Water Distribution Operator Certificate
- Three years of underground utility experience with each utility (water, gas, wastewater)
- Knowledge of valves, fittings, and clamps used in water, gas, and wastewater repairs
- Skilled in locating gas, water and sewer components using pipeline locating equipment, maps, and physical signs

Essential Duties
- Responds to USA mark and locate requests, marking water, gas, and wastewater mains and services in accordance with USA requirements.
- Locates and repairs water mains and services leaks; replaces galvanized water services with copper pipe; repairs service tap blow-outs, fire hydrant laterals, water valves, curb stops, and meter couplings; taps into existing water mains and installs water meters.
- Locates and repairs gas mains and services leaks; installs P.E. gas mains and services; replaces leaking gas services; taps into existing gas mains; tests new gas installations; installs gas meters and regulators.
- Taps into existing sewer mains; repairs laterals and manholes; replaces sewer lateral traps with cleanouts; locates cleanouts; cleans and chemically treats sewer mains for root and rodent control.
- Records and diagrams completed for work orders and job prints for submittal to the supervisor.
- Sets up barricades, flashers, and cones to protect work sites.

Sufficient education, training, and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities which would typically be acquired through:
- High school graduate or equivalent training and experience.
- One year of experience in construction, preferably in a position working with gas, water, or sewer systems, or experience in maintenance and operation of gas, water, or sewer systems.
- Underground construction experience preferred.
Special Requirements: Possession of a valid California Class B commercial driver's permit with appropriate endorsements required within sixty days of appointment with the ability to obtain a license within six months of appointment.
