Job Description

The Project Engineering Piping/Mechanical Designer is responsible for completing piping design and drafting duties related to all areas of the plant and associated engineering disciplines. This individual works independently on assignments, taking basic project information and producing finished engineering drawings suitable for bidding and construction. Documents produced include engineering flow diagrams, civil drawings, detailed equipment arrangements, installation details, piping plans, piping isometrics, electrical drawings, miscellaneous construction, and as-built drawings. The design/drafter may also be responsible for making project design decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Make civil and mechanical system design decisions.
  • Apply sound project design engineering principles.
  • Ensure systems and equipment are designed and installed in accordance with client and regulatory standards.
  • Assist with project reviews and system design.
  • Review field installations to ensure compliance with design.
  • Verify and complete as-built drawings.
  • Develop construction drawings.
  • Work directly with Project Engineers, Project Planners, and Construction Field Coordinators to define project implementation requirements.
  • Develop equipment and material take-off and specifications.
  • Conduct surveying and field verification as required to support project design.
  • Develop site plans, equipment layouts, piping plans, and isometrics (60% of time).
  • Update as-built drawings (30% of time).
  • Assist Project Construction Coordinator as needed with construction activities (5% of time).
  • Work with Project Planner to establish resources (5% of time).

Essential Skills

  • Associate degree in Drafting/Design Technology or equivalent.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Capability of making decisions independently.
  • Strong personal initiative.
  • Basic civil and mechanical engineering knowledge.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Ability to work well in a culture that values diversity in a self-directed team environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Excellent Auto CAD operating skills.
  • Surveying and field verification using Leica point cloud.
  • Understanding of mechanical and civil design practices and regulations related to system design, equipment layout, and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of design codes, standards, and regulations (i.e., OSHA, ADA) applicable to civil and piping work.
  • Previous manufacturing experience, particularly with process-related equipment (e.g., pumps, piping, and heat exchangers).
  • Capability of working independently.

Work Environment

This position is in a manufacturing environment that requires the ability to ascend and descend stairs periodically and the capability to lift and carry 40 lbs. The role requires access to all areas of the plant and working during the plant's core business hours. Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support plant activities.

This is a Contract position based out of Muscatine, IA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $55.00/hr.
