Job Description

The Project Manager / Estimator leads both preconstruction estimating and active project management for multiple construction projects, with a focus on steel fabrication. This role combines pricing, bidding, sales support, scheduling, budgeting, and field coordination to deliver projects safely, on time, and within budget. The position suits a self-driven professional who enjoys balancing diverse responsibilities, working closely with customers, and managing several projects simultaneously in a flexible and collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed estimating and pricing for construction projects, with an emphasis on steel fabrication work.
  • Lead preconstruction estimating activities, including preliminary scheduling, budgeting, and early project planning.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings as required to gather project information, clarify scope, and represent the company professionally.
  • Solicit, obtain, and evaluate quotes from bid partners, subcontractors, and vendors to support competitive and accurate bids.
  • Prepare professional, comprehensive proposals and submit bids in accordance with client requirements and deadlines.
  • Manage preconstruction project management activities such as contract and scope of work review, project setup, and preliminary scheduling.
  • Coordinate and control the approval and submittal process, ensuring timely review and release of drawings, materials, and documentation.
  • Plan pre-erection activities, including logistics, sequencing, and coordination with field crews to support safe and efficient installation.
  • Create and manage Requests for Information (RFIs) to resolve design, scope, and constructability questions.
  • Prepare, price, and submit project change orders, ensuring accurate documentation and timely approval.
  • Coordinate daily and weekly activities with the general contractor and internal field crews to keep projects on schedule and aligned with scope.
  • Monitor and manage project schedules and budgets, taking proactive steps to maintain or improve project performance.
  • Submit progress invoices and manage billing throughout the project lifecycle, including supporting documentation as required.
  • Oversee project closeout procedures, including warranties, as-built submittals, and final documentation.
  • Monitor safety and quality on all projects in collaboration with the field superintendent, reinforcing jobsite safety standards and quality control practices.
  • Maintain clear, positive communication with customers via email, phone, and face-to-face meetings, building strong, long-term relationships.
  • Effectively manage and prioritize up to eight projects at a time, balancing estimating, project management, and client communication.
  • Support internal collaboration across office and field teams to foster a cohesive, high-performing project environment.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in construction project management, estimating, or a closely related role.
  • Proven experience in estimation, including developing detailed quantities, pricing, and complete bid packages.
  • Strong project management skills, including planning, organizing, and leading projects from preconstruction through closeout.
  • Hands-on experience with bidding processes, including bid preparation, bid reviews, and competitive pricing strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain project schedules and budgets throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Practical knowledge of construction practices, with specific exposure to steel fabrication and related scopes of work.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and perform accurate takeoffs.
  • Experience using project management or construction software such as Procore, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project, Primavera, or similar tools.
  • Experience with cost tracking, forecasting, and budget management for active projects.
  • Familiarity with subcontractor coordination, buyout processes, and vendor negotiations.
  • Working knowledge of jobsite safety standards, including OSHA requirements, and quality control practices.
  • Strong time-management and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for professional interaction with clients, contractors, and internal teams.
  • Self-driven, proactive work style with the ability to operate independently while maintaining accountability for schedule and budget.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Experience working on steel fabrication or structural steel projects is highly beneficial.
  • Comfort using a range of construction and project management software platforms and adapting to new tools as needed.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for evaluating bids, resolving field issues, and managing changes.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with customers, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Attention to detail in documentation, proposals, RFIs, and change order submissions.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with field superintendents and crews to support safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to respond to changing project demands and priorities.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $120000.00/yr.
