The Opportunity
A highly regarded insurance carrier is seeking an experienced Trial Attorney to join its New Jersey staff counsel office. This is a hybrid position based in Roseland, Hamilton or Marlton. The role requires two days in the office and three days remote. Base salary range is $152K - $180K, plus a 10% bonus and a competitive benefits package.
Primary Duties
The Trial Attorney provides legal representation to insured clients in the defense of litigated claims, as well as offering legal guidance to internal claims professionals. The position entails managing a full caseload from inception through resolution while ensuring compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements. Additional duties include the following:
- Independently represent insured clients in court and present witnesses and evidence in litigated matters
- Analyze complex legal and factual issues; conduct thorough legal research and develop effective defense strategies
- Draft pleadings, discovery, motions, and legal briefs
- Prepare for and handle all aspects of trials and appeals, as assigned
- Provide timely legal advice and clear communication to clients and claims professionals in accordance with litigation guidelines
- Assist in developing training materials for the Claims Department
- Communicate professionally with courts, witnesses, opposing counsel, and clients
- Manage a caseload efficiently from inception to resolution
- Travel as needed for depositions, court appearances, and meetings (approximately 20%)
- Stay current with legal trends and complete continuing legal education (CLE) requirements
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school required
- Active membership in the New Jersey Bar in good standing required
- Strong knowledge of New Jersey state laws, court procedures, and local practices
- Minimum of 7+ years of legal experience in the jurisdiction
- Trial experience preferred
- Admission to multiple state bars is a plus
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent legal research, analytical, and litigation skills
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and web browsers (Chrome or Edge)
- Experience with legal case management systems in a paperless environment
- Strong typing and organizational skills
- Knowledge of the insurance industry and business operations preferred
- Valid driver’s license in good standing required
