The City of Norwalk is seeking an experienced Tree Trimmer I to join our dedicated Public Services Department. If you are passionate about tree care and committed to improving our urban environment, we would love to hear from you!
As a Tree Trimmer I your responsibilities will include trimming, planting, and maintaining city trees and shrubs to encourage healthy growth and enhance aesthetic appeal. You will safely operate tree-trimming equipment and tools and collaborate with team members to uphold the highest standards of public safety and service. Additional duties may be assigned as needed to support the department's overall goals.

DEFINITION

Trims, plants, and cares for City trees and shrubs; may lead the work of a crew; performs related duties as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey level class in the Tree Trimmer class series. Positions in this classification perform general tree trimming work under general supervision.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of a Tree Trimmer II, Maintenance Worker III, and/or Maintenance Supervisor.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May exercise general lead responsibility over lower-level maintenance crews.



Essential duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Trims and prunes trees, shrubs, and hedges in parkways, medians, and other City grounds; climbs trees using ropes or spurs; cleans surrounding areas; utilizes various hand, power tools, and equipment, such as pruners, hedgers, clippers, chain-saws, and chipper.

Operates tower trucks in the trimming and pruning of parkway trees; sets up cones and safety indicators; ensures safety of crew and public.

Removes trees that are dead, diseased, or causing damage to concrete; uses stump grinder to remove stump; root prunes trees by using root pruner to prevent further concrete damage; prunes trees to compensate for loss of pruned roots.

Plants trees; prepares ground; waters and fertilizes new tree; uses auger for tree planting.

Braces, cables, and performs cavity repair on trees; performs tree surgery as needed; treats cut surfaces to protect from fungi and insects.

Depending on assignment, makes specific work assignments to crew members and assists in the preparation of performance evaluations; prepares and submits records and reports concerning work performance and materials used; provides assistance in the planning of work projects, including the estimation of supplies, materials, and equipment needed to complete projects.Knowledge of: the methods, materials, and equipment used in trimming and caring for trees and shrubs; methods of rigging such as ropes, lines, tackle, and guy wires and the various knots used for rigging; safety precautions to be observed in tree trimming work; trees, growing patterns and diseases, pesticides and herbicides and proper application.

Ability to: operate and maintain aerial platform, brush chipper, stump cutters, and all types of saws, both manual and power; make proper cuts to drop limbs and remove trees; climb trees with ropes and saddles; follow written and oral instructions; prune trees to get the best effects.

Education and/or Experience
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary. Example combinations include:

Graduation from high school or equivalent and two years of experience in tree care and maintenance.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of these positions, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, grasp, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to pull, push, walk, stand, crouch, kneel and stoop. The employee is occasionally required to balance and climb. The employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific visual abilities required by these positions include those required for those who operate cars, trucks, and other heavy equipment.
Work EnvironmentWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electric shock. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud in field settings.
